3 of the best One Piece Devil Fruits

One Piece is a series filled with crazy, out-of-this-world powers that all stem from a specific type of magical fruit — Devil Fruit. The powers that these fruits can bestow upon the person that unknowingly chomps into them can vary from being completely over the top powerful, cool, or even totally absurd. Nothing is off the table when it comes to this wonderful power system that Eiichiro Oda has created.

So today, I want to dive into the world of Devil Fruits and talk about some of my absolute favourite powers and the people that use them! I’m going to avoid talking about some of the main characters like Luffy or Nico Robin, just to spice things up and talk about some of the lesser appreciated powers.

Tori Tori no Mi – Model Phoenix – Marco

Marco was first introduced briefly around episode 150 and at this point, all we know is that he is a member of the Whitebeard pirates, one of the most famous and powerful pirate crews to ever sail the waters of the Grand Line. It’s during the Marineford arc where we get to properly meet Marco and finally, we get to see his powers — in case you hadn’t already guessed from the name, he has the ability to turn into a phoenix.

Within the world of One Piece, there are an uncountable number of Devil Fruits, and while each of these fruits is unique, they share a type depending on the type of power that they give. Zoan-type fruits allow users to transform into a certain animal species, and these can range from a normal Zoan, Ancient Zoan, or Mythical Zoan. Mythical Zoan fruits contain the ability to transform into creatures of myth or legend and are the rarest type of fruit in the world of One Piece.

So not only is Marco the second in command of one of the most powerful pirate crews, but he also holds the power of the legendary firebird. This gives him greatly increased strength along with the regenerative powers that a phoenix is known for, plus as it is a bird-type Devil Fruit, he also gained the ability to fly at great speeds. Honestly, though, I just love the way that Oda has designed his version of the phoenix. It’s a light blue and yellow bird entirely made of fire and it carries over some of Marco’s traits even in full phoenix form, such as his dopey eyes and glasses.

Mochi Mochi no Mi – Charlotte Katakuri

Over the last decade and a half that I have been watching and reading One Piece, we’ve seen our crew fight a massive and varied array of bad guys — including a clown who can split his body apart, a fishman, a fishman on steroids, a mafia boss made of sand, and even a literal dragon. Despite all of these memorable villains though, there is one that stands out more than the others, and that is Katakuri: the man made of sweet sticky rice.

There are a few things that I really like about both this character and the ability, so let’s start with why Katakuri himself is interesting. Despite being a character standing in Luffy’s way, he is extremely honourable and desires nothing but a fair fight with a strong opponent. He even goes so far as stabbing himself to even the playing field after Luffy is blindsided by a third party during their fight.

In addition to this, Katakuri’s mastery of the observation haki gives him an interesting perspective on things. Haki is another power within the world of One Piece — specifically, observation haki allows the user to gain limited precognitive abilities, essentially allowing him glimpses into the future.

Finally his power, the Mochi Mochi Devil Fruit. Right off the bat, this power acts in a very similar way to Luffy’s own Gum Gum fruit in that it allows Katakuri’s body to become stretchy and move in ways similar to Luffy. What’s most interesting about his Devil Fruit though is the fact that it is the only revealed “special paramecia type” fruit. This is because his fruit, while a paramecia type, offers abilities similar to that of a logia type in that Katakuri is able to transform his whole body into mochi to avoid attacks.

Goro Goro no Mi – Enel

So we’ve spoken about a zoan fruit for Marco and a paramecia fruit for Katakuri, so it’s only right that we finish off with a logia-type fruit right? And when it comes to logia fruit, I can’t think of anything more overpowered than the Goro Goro no Mi, the fruit which gives the users the ability to become a literal lightning god.

Unlike the previous two on the list where I spoke about the users themselves and what makes them interesting in the way they apply their abilities, this isn’t like that — Enel, the user of this fruit, sucks. He is the main antagonist of the Skypiea arc and this man is way too uncreative to get the most out of the ability to literally become lightning!

Incompetent character aside, the power of the fruit itself is undeniable and incredible, and there are almost no weaknesses to this kind of power. Not only does lightning have absurdly destructive capabilities, but it also allows for almost instantaneous travel in that you move… well, at the speed of lightning — not as quick as light, but still pretty damn fast. Finally, the user of this fruit has almost no weaknesses, the only thing you really need to be on the lookout for is a boy made out of rubber…
