A Certain Magical Index: The Movie – The Miracle of Endymion Review (Anime)

A third season of A Certain Magical Index has finally been announced, and Manga UK has been busily releasing all of the series’ content on Blu-ray and DVD. The Miracle of Endymion is the first and only movie based on the series, and it’s an entertaining ride which proved to be a pleasure to watch.

When spaceplane Orion crashes with no casualties, it’s deemed a miracle by the rest of the world. Because of how wildly popular the story becomes, it’s never publicly revealed that the pilot was the sole casualty of the crash. Spaceplanes aren’t necessary anymore thanks to the installation of the Space Elevator, allowing people to simply get on an elevator and be lifted into space. What really happened on that spaceplane though, and why was there only one casualty in an incident in which nobody should’ve survived?

An entertaining ride which proved to be a pleasure to watch.

Toma and Index become fans of a new singer, Arisa, who is quickly gaining popularity on the internet and due to her public shows. People fall in love with her music instantly, thanks to her catchy tunes and fantastic lyrics, and this catches the attention of The Black Crow Unit and their leader, Shoutaura Sequenzia.

Toma and Index fight to protect Arisa from being taken away by these new faces, but also from a group of magicians and Stiyl Magnus who also are looking to capture Arisa too. Many hidden truths come to light and Arisa is at the center of many of them, and the 90 minute movie never slow down or loses your attention. Well-paced and exciting, I thoroughly enjoyed The Miracle of Endymion.

I’ve been a big J.C.Staff fan and a good number of their works are among my favourite anime, and their work on The Miracle of Endymion is nothing short of brilliant. The world of A Certain Magical Index is wonderfully realised in this original movie, although you’re expected to be familiar with its world and characters.

The action scenes are explosive and bursting with a variety of cool effects such as magic and people using giant machines, and there’s a vast array of colour and visual humour to counteract the film’s serious narrative.

The world of A Certain Magical Index is wonderfully realised in this original movie.

A few tracks from the series return here, including the excellent Time Limit, along with a bunch of new tracks and, of course, there are a couple for Arisa. They’re lovely to listen to, and the soundtrack is every bit as wonderful as the movie’s English dub.

Micah Solusod, Monica Rial, Megan Shipman, Whitney Rogers and Maxey Whitehead are the five voices you’ll be hearing the most of in The Miracle of Endymion, and I have no issue with that considering how natural they sound. They manage to convincingly portray a wide range of emotions when the situation calls for it, and they’re a delight to listen to.

I know I’d happily watch it again.

If you’re an A Certain Magical Index fan then, of course, you won’t want to miss out on this. It doesn’t work as the best gateway option if you’re new to the series, but I’m sure you’ll watch the series and be itching to watch the movie soon enough. As a standalone movie and an addition to the series, it’s one that J.C.Staff and author Kazuma Kamachi can be proud of. I know I’d happily watch it again.

Spread the love!
