Hump Day Husbandos: Fudo Aikawa (Love After World Domination)

Hump Day Husbandos

Opposites attracting has been a trope in fiction for generations, even before the forbidden romance of Paula Abdul and MC Scat Cat in the ’80s. Two lovers overcoming their differences to find common ground is the basis of Love After World Domination, where the heroic Fudo (a member of the Freezing Sentai Gelato 5) and Desumi (notorious Reaper Princess of the evil organisation Secret Society Gekko) come in, proving that love can shine even on the most ridiculous of battlefields.

For this week’s Hump Day Husbandos, we’re shining a light on Red Gelato himself, Fudo Aikawa, and his “almost too good for his own good” outlook on life that gets him through the heavy responsibility put upon him.

Who is Fudo Aikawa?

Fudo and Desumi

The backstory behind Love After World Domination is surprisingly grim; fully half the world has been burned to the ground by Secret Society Gekko, leaving just half the world safe from ruin. Of course, that half of the world doesn’t seem too worse for wear. It still has schools and amusement parks and giant killer robots. All the important things that keep civilization running smoothly.

Fighting back against the advancement of Gekko is the Gelato 5, a group of five young people who combat Gekko and protect the remaining populace from their attacks. Red Gelato, as is often the case in the tokusatsu series that inspired Love After World Domination, is the heart and soul of the team, providing witty banter against enemies and proving to be the most formidable opponent in the fight against Gekko. Fudo might be a simple high school student much of the time, but when danger arises, he dons those red tights and goes to save the world.

Why we love him

Fudo working out

Fudo Aikawa is a himbo of the highest order. The boy spends all his time getting buff in the gym, fighting evil, or swooning helplessly over his beloved Desumi. Though the two are on opposite points of the moral compass, they quickly find that it is love at first fight. Fudo’s earnest nature and absolute faith in the love that the two share is enough to melt even the most frozen of hearts. He might not be clever and he will probably never get her overly complicated coffee order right, but his heart is firmly in the right place so that has to count for something.

His simple, honest charm was enough to win over the Reaper Princess, despite her fearsome reputation and talent at dishing out physical punishment. It is clear that he is too dumb to know their love is forbidden, but he is simply too in love to care. Fudo is a hopeless romantic with a taste for dangerous women, so I can certainly relate to him.

Why you’ll love him

I would have expected that Fudo’s overbearingly innocent act would get tiresome after a while, but much of the charm of the show comes from how sweet and wholesome his actions remain while being surrounded by the chaos of a typical tokusatsu show. He doesn’t ever actively try to change who Desumi is, despite their clearly different paths in life. Instead, he just encourages her to be herself and make decisions for who she wants to be.

In a world that only sees Reaper Princess, Fudo is the only one who actually sees the girl beneath the costume. While the rest of Gekko assumes her cute, pink bag must be a ploy to catch the enemy off guard, Fudo is the only one who says that it suits her without having any nefarious purposes. He just wants to support his girlfriend, even if that means they occasionally need to fight in a warehouse and that kind of relationship is beautiful.
