Hump Day Husbandos: Loid Forger (Spy x Family)
When the fate of the world is at stake, you need to bring in the very best. If the mission requires infiltration and disguise, then you call Agent Twilight. Of course, that isn’t his real name. Most often, he goes by Loid Forger, but that isn’t what his parents called him either. This is an international man of such mystery that we don’t even know his true name, but that doesn’t make him any less husbando material.
This week for our Hump Day Husbandos feature, we dive back into the world of spies, assassins, and telepaths to celebrate Loid Forger of Spy x Family.
Who is Loid Forger?
That is the true question here. The truth is, we don’t know a lot about the man they call Twilight. Even when his backstory is explored, his name is redacted in all conversations — because the truth is that he isn’t a single person anymore. He has given himself over completely to the job of being a spy. And Twilight is the best spy you will ever find.
His ability to change masks and personalities on a whim is second to none. He is so good that he can even impersonate people in front of their co-workers without raising an eyebrow. He has a face and a scheme for every situation, and he won’t stop until he has achieved his mission. So when the Westalis government needs someone to infiltrate the higher echelons of Ostanian society, they bring in their best. Twilight takes on the name of Loid Forger and sets off on his toughest mission yet; being a father and husband.
Why we love him
Loid Forger is never more uncomfortable than when he is attempting to be a normal family man. Much like his fictional wife Yor, he is a spy first and foremost. However, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a kind heart beating in there. When danger threatens Anya, his adopted daughter and the show’s resident telepath, he drops everything to go and rescue her. He even considers dropping the entire mission to avoid putting a child in the middle of his world.
A simple spy wouldn’t make for good husbando material, but Loid Forger manages to play both the doting parent and spy better than anyone else in fiction. Though he is reluctant to admit it, he cares about Anya and shows genuine pride in her accomplishments. What makes him so fun to watch throughout the story is how he tries to keep his family at a distance even while they all grow closer together. These are the wholesome moments that bring the character and the show to life.
Why you’ll love him
Though he has some stiff competition from returning husbando Naofumi, Loid Forger is likely going to carry this season’s male offerings on his slender shoulders. He straddles that line between sexy and dangerous, giving us both looks in equal measure. His appeal comes together completely when he is looking after Anya, who knows that, despite his often cold exterior, Loid is still a decent person.
Loid Forger carries his tragic past with him, seeking to build a world where no child has to cry because of loss. He is a spy to help maintain the fragile peace between the two nations. It is a messy world, but he’s there to keep it together and look damn good while doing it.
