Hump Day Husbandos: Makoto Tachibana (Free!)

Hump Day Husbandos

It’s officially only three more Wednesdays before 2022 comes to a close, so let’s bid it adieu in style with some of the characters that I am most fond of. This week I am looking back to 2013 with an anime series that took the Internet — or more specifically teenage girls — by storm. Discussing this show is a long time coming, even though it was all that was on my mind at one point. So here’s to the sweetest guy in Free! – Makoto Tachibana.

The article is spoiler-free.

Who is Makoto Tachibana?

Makoto Tachibana is one of the four main characters in Free!, and is seen by Haruka’s side 95% of the time. The two have known one another for the longest time within the central friend group, having become close in kindergarten and remained one another’s best friends. Makoto keeps Haruka in line and maintains his dignity by reminding him how to appropriately function as a normal human being in society – stopping him from slipping out of his clothes at the sight of water is one such example.

At the start of the series, Makoto is the captain of the Iwatobi High School Swim Club. But this title and his job changes across the course of the series, as he comes to plan and feel out his career path as time goes by.

Why we love him

Makoto is seen as the mother hen of the group since his mind is often plagued by worries and concerns for his peers with very little mental space for anything else. He’s the kindest and most considerate character of the series for this reason alone, and he does plenty else in his actions and words to exhibit just how kind-natured he is.

His reliability is an obvious trait from the get-go as an older brother type of character both figuratively and literally; the latter shown through just how much he cares for his younger twin siblings. Furthermore, he is also extremely patient and supportive when teaching others, be it when giving a rundown of the basics of swimming to both Rei or when volunteering to teach kids.

He is also just as much of a darling and upstanding citizen when it comes to both people and animals. He is especially considerate of strays. And despite his stature and physique, there is a fun sense of juxtaposition in his personality in how he scares easily despite his big build. Perfection is the right word here – what’s not to love?

All in all, Makoto is yet another hunk with a heart of gold, and we all know just how much I love to see that type of character in any kind of product. It’s an easy 10/10.

Why you will love him

Makoto Tachibana from Free!

Makoto is the endearing sweetheart of Free! no matter how many more characters it ends up getting or how old his character gets. He is a quintessential comfort character and represents everything good and wholesome about the anime itself. He has a surprisingly nice amount of nuance and depth to him too, what with how he learns to be more outspoken and assertive across the series since he is initially seen as shy and reserved despite wanting the best for his friends.

The particularly traumatic event that made him fearful of the exact passion he has as an adult is also well presented and explored. This even directly correlates to why and how his expertise is the backstroke, since his preference is for looking above the water instead. And despite still struggling with this fear at the time, he faces it head on to save a dear friend from drowning. This man makes me cry a river with his selflessness.

Before we wrap this up, there’s also the fact of who is behind his pretty face. Johnny Yong Bosch is already a flawless choice for his dub voice, but you can never go wrong with the Japanese voice actor of Tatsuhisa Suzuki. He’s the vocalist for OLDCODEX, who perform the series’ opening theme, and can also be heard as the voices behind the otome love interests Sena Yukito (Lover Pretend) and Akuroou (Dairoku: Agents of Sakuratani). He’s also Raihan (Pokémon Sword and Shield). Talk about the duality of man.

Check out the series now on Crunchyroll (pretty please).
