Hump Day Husbandos: Toshiro Hitsugaya (Bleach)

Hump Day Husbandos

It’s long overdue, but it’s time for Toshiro Hitsugaya to have his time in the limelight. Welcome back to another installment in the Hump Day Husbandos series to all of our wonderful readers — might I add that you’re looking particularly cultured today? (*looks at the grotty T-shirt he’s wearing and the frayed blanket he has wrapped over himself* Thanks – Ed.)

We’re not only going to be celebrating our favourite husbandos today, but we’re also going to be celebrating the return of Bleach — one of the anime that was integral to my youth. It was originally announced a while back that the Bleach anime would one day see its return, and about two weeks ago we finally saw the first trailer for the final arc of the anime!

Hump Day Husbandos: Toshiro Hitsugaya (Bleach)

Who is Toshiro Hitsugaya?

Toshiro Hitsugaya is one of the captains of the 13 court guard squads within Soul Society — the place in which the soul reapers and souls who have passed on reside. Specifically, Toshiro is the captain of the 10th division within Soul Society, and he is also the youngest Soul Reaper to not only reach the rank of captain but also acquire his Bankai.

As he is on the younger side within Soul Society, Toshiro isn’t the tallest and this is often a sore point of his that some other characters like to poke in order to get a response. Keeping in the theme of his ice powers, Toshiro has white hair and turquoise eyes — features that draw a lot of attention whenever he is visiting the human world.

Toshiro has one of, in my opinion, the most interesting zanpakuto in the world of Bleach. Each character in the series has a unique power that comes from their soul, and Toshiro’s is regarded as the most powerful ice-type zanpakuto — Hyorinmaru.

Why we love Toshiro Hitsugaya

Toshiro is a character who is wise beyond his years, and the conclusions he is able to reach about various situations come to reinforce our understanding of how this is someone who managed to reach the rank of Captain at such a young age.

During the first massive arc of Bleach, in which there are some dark and traitorous people lurking about within the walls of Soul Society. It’s Toshiro who figures these things out first and starts putting the pieces together before anyone else.

One of the greatest things about Toshiro comes in his relationship with his Lieutenant, Rangiku Matsumoto. Toshiro is a hard-working, driven, and mature individual whereas Rangiku’s personality is more of the laid-back, carefree, and fun-loving type. It’s the contrast between the two of them that results in them stealing every single scene that they’re in together.

Rangiku isn’t the type of character that finds Toshiro to be a bore, or a “stick in the mud” either; she is constantly trying to pull him into her outings and actively pursues having fun with him. Finally, even though the two act the way they do around each other, when duty calls Rangiku will put complete faith in her captain and stand by him no matter what.

Why you’ll love Toshiro Hitsugaya

I’ll be the first to say that as a fan of Toshiro, we have a lot to look forward to in the future of the Bleach anime — if you saw the trailer for the final arc then you might have caught a glimpse of what it is that I’m talking about. If you’ve yet to start Bleach and you’re interested in getting started, then you have a ton to look forward to as well!

Toshiro is a great character because he is incredibly far from being the perfect “prodigy” that he is sometimes held up as. Yes, he may well be the youngest Soul Reaper to ever attain bankai, but he is also young and impulsive and on numerous occasions does that come back to bite him.

He is a great character, and I can’t wait to see more of him and the rest of the Bleach cast back in a weekly series!
