Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link cancelled, new screenshots for Kingdom Hearts IV shown

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, originally delayed from a 2024 release window, is now confirmed by Square Enix to be cancelled entirely.

In development for over 6 years, the GPS-based mobile title was intended to cover events that took place between the events of Kingdom Hearts Union X and Dark Road (both being mobile titles that are no longer available to play). Not much else was actually revealed about Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, outside of its connection to the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV.

As for why it’s now cancelled, the reasoning is suitably vague — “it would be difficult for [them] to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time”. We’ll likely never find out exactly why that was the case, though it’s perhaps due to not figuring out a way to monetise the game properly. Union X saw significant power creep and aggressive monetisation that caused issues later down the line, and the GPS aspect of Missing-Link presumably brings its own issues.

Perhaps in an attempt to placate Kingdom Hearts fans, a couple new screenshots for Kingdom Hearts IV have been shown off. Nothing major (and still no release date of course), but it’s at least something in the wake of Missing-Link’s departure.
