Let’s Play Technos Arcade 1!

Let’s get retro! You may recall that last week we took a look at the excellent Technos Arcade 1 cartridge for Evercade, included with all the different bundles of the new TV-connected Evercade VS console. It’s a great time, featuring a nice blend of puzzlers, brawlers, shoot ’em up and action adventure funtimes — including some honest-to-goodness rarities that you don’t see talked about all that often.

So, I thought, for this week’s scheduled Let’s Play, why don’t we just have some fun with these classics of Japanese gaming? That sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it? Of course it does. Sit back, relax and enjoy the inimitable noise of late ’80s arcade games, accompanied by some British idiot who isn’t very good at them.

While the Technos Arcade 1 cartridge has been heavily marketed alongside the Evercade VS console — as noted above, it’s included in everything from the Starter package to the massive Mega Bundle our friends at Funstock are offering — it also works just fine on the Evercade handheld if you have one, allowing you to take these arcade classics with you on the go. Or, indeed, play them on the toilet, as God always intended when He invented handheld gaming devices.

The interesting thing about the Technos Arcade 1 collection for Evercade is that there’s a few games on here that are actually more fun when played at home than when you would have had a chance to play them in the arcade. Double Dragon 3 seems less obnoxious if you’re not having to pay up real money for power-ups, for example, while the intense puzzle challenge of Block Out feels a lot more… conquerable if you happen to have access to unlimited continues!

There are some great games in this package — and a fun lesson in Japanese arcade gaming history, too. So let’s play!
