Mario Kart World fully revealed, confirmed as Switch 2 launch title
The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct opened with a full reveal of Mario Kart World, detailing its open world and confirming a 5 June 2025 release date alongside the console.
Mario Kart World features a full open world structure for the first time in the series, with all courses taking place on the same large map. Races feature 24 players, double the count of previous mainline Mario Kart entries.
In the standard Grand Prix mode, you’ll be tasked with racing between each track as well, reducing downtime. Meanwhile, Knockout Tour mode features races from one end of the map to the other, with low placement players being eliminated at each checkpoint.
If you don’t feel like racing, it’s possible to freeroam with other players online. This can be used to learn the map’s layout, or just take pictures with friends using the included photo mode.
Mario Kart World is shaping up to be an interesting entry in the franchise, offering some wacky new ideas even outside of the open world — there are tons of characters that have never been playable before, along with new manoeuvres like wall riding and grinding. However, if you’re after a physical copy, prepare to pay an eye-watering £74.99 in the UK.
