Masamune-kun’s Revenge Review (Anime)
Masamune-kun’s Revenge was one of the funniest anime to air during Winter 2017, and it’s one that I have my fingers crossed for in hopes that it’ll get a second season. Starring stud Masamune who is trying to win the affections of an unattainable girl in school – who has a reputation for crushing those who confess their love to her – he has his work cut out despite being so dreamy.
Masamune used to be an overweight, bullied, snobby child when he was young due to his family’s wealth and when his friend, Aki, turned him down, he vowed to become the pinnacle of men in an attempt to win her affections — of course, he does this in the hopes of revenge that he can reject her. I was sold on the premise, especially as it sounds more comedic than cruel, and Masamune-kun turned out to be one of the funniest anime I’ve seen. The colourful cast quickly won me over, and its brand of humour tickled me in all the right ways.

Silver Link are capable of creating some beautiful content and Masamune-Kun’s Revenge is one of their best works to date — they’ve also worked on Kokoro Connect, Chaos;Child, Dusk Maiden of Amnesia and the currently airing (and brilliant) Restaurant to Another World. Silver Link make the most out of the budget that they’re given, even for new shows, and they manage to include an incredible amount of detail across all aspects of Masamune-kun. There’s a lot of visual humour to enjoy and there bright, shiny colour scheme is gorgeous.

Hopefully Masamune-Kun’s Revenge will one day see a home release in the West, and then hopefully it’ll get an English dub, but, I watched it on Crunchyroll in Japanese. I had no problems with it and the voice-actors and actresses perform their roles with gusto with the ice queen Aki sounding suitably savage, and Masamune being confident with his inflated ego — hearing the pair of them flustered is great. There’s some stellar music work going on here and the opening theme is amazing, and I still happily listen to it now.

The manga is currently being published in English thanks to Seven Seas, and it’s one that I’d certainly like to pick up some day — where’s that digital version out, huh? It had me often cracking up and seeing how the characters develop is satisfying. With several plot threads to wrap up still, and a whole lot more laughs to be had, you should definitely check out the first season for a super entertaining time.
