Games I’d like to clear from my 2024 backlog in 2025

2024, despite everything, was a year filled with great games. And, like every other year, I was unable to get around to actually playing all of them.

There are lots that I would like to try in 2025, though with how busy things are panning out already (why is February crammed full of releases?!) I’ll likely still not get around to everything.

However, below are 5 of the 2024 games I want to play sometime in the near future — if I wanted to list all of them, we’d be here all day! Who knows, maybe you’ve ended up mission out on a few of these too.

My 2024 backlog (well, part of it)

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

The biggest release of this list, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth continues the trilogy of “remakes” as Cloud heads out of Midgar into the wider world.

Final Fantasy VII Remake was a pretty enjoyable start to the saga, with things already going off the rails near the end. I was surprised at just how well all the new content integrated into what was originally a rather short part of the original FF7.

I held off on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in case they announced any DLC again, preferring to go through all of it in one go. However, it looks like they might not do an Intergrade-style DLC release this time, so I’m probably safe to start now.

At the very least, waiting things out does mean that I can pick up the PC version in January. The gap between PlayStation and PC releases is a little shorter than with Remake, so I wonder if the finale might end up on both platforms simultaneously.

UFO 50

UFO 50 is a game I’d been keeping an eye on since it was announced quite a while back. However, once it actually finally released, I found myself already swamped with a number of other recent releases.

The concept of “Action 52 but good” is an ambitious one, as making a single game, let alone 50, is far from an easy task. I’m a fan of how it’s being framed in UFO 50, with the game’s being part of an obscure fictional company, with the games increasing in complexity and technical skill as the years go by.

I’m tempted to pick this up soon, and chip away at the entire collection over the next year or so. From everything I’ve seen, there’s more than enough to keep you going for a long time, even without taking 100% completion into account.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance

Atlus and updated re-releases, name a more iconic duo. Though in this case, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance did allow the once Switch-exclusive to come to basically everything else. The base game had some trouble running on Nintendo’s console, so I was always hoping ports would happen eventually.

Shin Megami Tensei V is an RPG that I didn’t hate, but it felt a little confused as to what it wanted to be. Characters were introduced without really getting much time to develop, and areas were more open then previous SMT games but without really adding much to find.

From what I’ve read, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance’s new story at least attempts to give a little more time to its characters, even if it doesn’t always succeed. I’m also looking forward to smoother performance across the board on PC — since most of my playtime will likely be via a Legion Go, I can still play portably too.

Unicorn Overlord

It’s nice to see Vanillaware still bringing out new titles. There was a big gap between Dragon’s Crown and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, even with remakes of their existing titles launching in between, and their previous game Grand Knights History never even made it to the west.

I’ll admit that tactical RPGs aren’t exactly my favourite, though I’m fine with giving a new one a try. It’s not like Vanillaware are strangers to strategy games, either as the full game or just a single aspect of it like with 13 Sentinels.

At the very least, even if I dont enjoy the gameplay, there’s still a lot of nice art and character designs to look forward to.

Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess

It might be a weird choice to include another strategy game in this list, right after saying that I’m not the biggest fan of strategy games. But Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess has intrigued me ever since its initial reveal in 2023.

You have a mishmash of action combat, time management, and tower defence gameplay, all wrapped up in a distinct artstyle. There’s really not much like it, though the RTS-lite and hybrid gameplay gives Pikmin and Orcs Must Die vibes.

Since it’s still on Game Pass, I’ll have to give this a try sooner rather than later. I’ve often found myself procrastinating on games available via subscriptions until it’s too late (probably worth an article on its own) so hopefully I don’t repeat this once again.

And those are just a few of the 2024 games I’m hoping to remove from my backlog during 2025 (and likely onwards.) Though with next year shaping up to be another hectic one for gaming, I’m sure that my backlog is only going to grow even larger…
