Nerima Daikon Brothers Review (Anime)

Nerima Daikon Brothers has been on Anime Limited’s ‘to release’ pile for quite some time and is a comedy with several musical numbers — two brothers and their cousin, Hideki, Ichiro and Mako, who dream of their band making the big time whilst they work on multiple money-making schemes.

Nerima Daikon Brothers is an odd show but it’s bursting with a wonderful personality that makes it easy to watch, although I advise against binge-watching due to its episodic format. Hideki is romantically interested in Mako, who isn’t interested in reciprocating her cousin’s feelings, whilst Ichiro is the cool, suave one who mostly goes along with his brother’s grand and wild plans. Each episode follows a similar format where the Nerima Daikon Brothers succeed in their scheme just to have something go wrong afterwards, leading them to never being able to enjoy the money they make. It’s silly fun, and there aren’t many anime like it.

It’s silly fun, and there aren’t many anime like it.

The songs are like musical skits and many of their animations are recycled throughout the series but feature different subtitles to relate to on-going events, which is one of the reasons that it’s somewhat hard to binge-watch. The songs might be about love, money or gambling whilst using vegetables as payment with cute Korean employees, but there’s a lot of music and Studio Hibari wasted no time in squeezing out more laughs with them. Body gags are prominent and the animation in general is lovely — watching it, I thought the show would be older than 2006 but that was also 11 years ago now! There are a lot of references and parodies based on real life people in here too, so keep an eye out!

Anime Limited’s release only has the English voice-over, which is very rare, and features Greg Ayres and Chris Patton who’ve appeared in a good few comedy anime, along with Luci Christian. Their performances fit the eccentric characters well and none of them are half bad at singing either! The tunes are brief and catchy, and by the time you’ve watched it all it wouldn’t be surprising to have some of the tunes bouncing around your head — the trader one in each episode might be the catchiest!

The series will be something that’ll leave you with a smile on your face.

Nerima Daikon Brothers is something I undoubtedly enjoyed. It’s certainly good for laughs and when you want something to chill with when you aren’t looking for an anime with much depth, but if you’re looking for something with depth then you won’t find it here — Nerima Daikon Brothers aims to make you laugh and it delivers, proving to be a show bursting with charm. I’m happy to see Anime Limited go to great efforts to release this in the UK and it’s clearly a passion project of theirs and like the show itself, I’ve aimed to keep this review short but sweet as I’d rather not give the jokes away! If you’ve checked a trailer of it before and found yourself giggling away, then the series will be something that’ll leave you with a smile on your face.

Spread the love!
