Netflix announce 5 new anime series for 2021

Last night, Netflix showed off their future line-up of anime series, most of which planned for release in 2021. While this included previously revealed anime, such as Pacific Rim, they also had a good number of new series announcements for next year. Here’s a round-up of Netflix’s new acquisitions.

Rilakkuma’s Theme Park Adventure

Rilakkuma’s Theme Park Adventure teaser

A sequel to Rilakkuma and Kaoru, using the same stop-motion style that made the original series so charming. Rilakkuma’s Theme Park Adventure has no exact release date, set to release some time next year.

Grab your tickets and get in line for a new series of stop-motion adventures with Rilakkuma and Kaoru! Join Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma, Kiiroitori, and Kaoru as they explore an amusement park in its closing hours when Rilakkuma’s Theme Park Adventure arrives next year.

Thermae Romae Novae

Time travelling Roman bath designer Lucius uses the knowledge and ideas he gains from modern day Japan to create his own unique bathhouse. Thermae Romae has already had a previous anime adaption (and some live action movies), but this Netflix series is completely new. Another one with no exact release date, only a 2021 time frame.

When Roman Empire bath designer Lucius ends up in modern Japan, he’ll find the two cultures aren’t so different after all. The anime adaptation of Mari Yamazaki’s bathhouse comedy Thermae Romae Novae hits the screen in 2021!

High-Rise Invasion

The original manga for High-Rise Invasion ended last year, with its sequel series High-Rise Invasion Arrive still ongoing. It looks like a grim anime, set in a world made of seemingly infinite skyscrapers, and inhabited by masked killers. It’ll be available for streaming from February 2021.

As Yuri finds herself in a bizarre world of endless buildings and masked killers, she’ll do whatever it takes to find her brother and escape. Next year, discover the secret of the skyscrapers in action horror series High-Rise Invasion.

Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan

A Diamond Is Unbreakable spin-off featuring manga artist Rohan Kishibe. Oddly enough, Netflix don’t actually have the rights to Part 4 of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, only Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency. Either way, this is the first time the OVA series has been made available officially in English, also having an unspecified 2021 release date.

To truly capture the ways of the world, this manga artist will scour the globe for inspiration! All four episodes of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure spin-off Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan make their Netflix debut 2021.

The Way of the Househusband

The Way of the Househusband anime

The final new announcement (and the one we’re most looking forward to) is for the comedic The Way of the Househusband. Ex-Yakuza Tatsu puts his own spin on mundane household duties, with the original manga featuring some excellent comedic timing and artwork. One to look out for when it releases next year.

Japan’s most evil yakuza makes its cutest househusband! Follow Tatsu’s journey from underworld legend to domestic bliss when the anime adaptation of Kousuke Oono’s hit comedy manga The Way of the Househusband premieres in 2021.

Netflix are going all-in on anime, with some strong new series debuting over the coming year. Expect more announcements from them as they pick up even more series, and stay tuned for more concrete release date information.
