Nintendo buying Luigi’s Mansion 3 dev Next Level Games
In a rare move by the company, Nintendo are purchasing Next Level Games, the developer behind Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Super Mario Strikers.
This makes Next Level Games the second Western subsidiary of Nintendo, alongside Retro Studios.
According to the announcement, the reasoning behind this purchase was that “[a] number of owner-directors recently determined that the time is right for them to sell their shares, and NLG therefore began exploring potential sale transactions”.
Considering Next Level Games’ work on multiple Mario spin-off games in the past, it’s not a huge surprise that Nintendo are buying them outright.
Looking at the positive reception of Luigi’s Mansion 3, a fourth entry in the series seems like a given at this point. However, we’d like to see the studio get another chance to create a new Mario sports title instead. The world needs more edgy official artwork of Nintendo characters after all.
