PlayStation Plus rework announced for June 2022

Sony has revealed the changes coming to PlayStation Plus this June, which will include multiple tiers and a merge with PlayStation Now.

PlayStation Plus Essential will work the same as current Plus with no difference in price. However, despite saying that “there are no changes for existing PlayStation Plus members in this tier”, the benefits only list “Two monthly downloadable games” — currently there are three games minimum per month (two PS4, one PS5).

The PlayStation Now merge starts with PlayStation Plus Extra, which includes “up to 400” downloadable PS4 and PS5 titles.

Meanwhile, game streaming is available via the most expensive tier, PlayStation Plus Premium. Streaming will be possible for PS1, PS2, PSP, PS3, and PS4 games, with all but PS3 allowing downloads as well. In both the UK and EU, Premium is double the yearly cost of regular Plus, reaching a hefty £99.99 / €119.99 per year.

While this mainly seems like a way to compete with Microsoft’s Game Pass, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan stated in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz that new PlayStation releases will not come to Plus day 1.

Confirmed launch titles for the new tiers include Death Stranding, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Mortal Kombat 11, and Returnal, with more coming in the future.
