Scarlett Johansson to Play Motoko in Ghost in the Shell Live Action

The rumor that Scarlett Johansson is playing the role of The Major in Ghost in the Shell live action adaptation has been confirmed. This movie adaptation is planned to release in spring 2017. and is directed by Rupert Sanders.

 

This well known franchise stemmed from the Masamune Shirow’s manga of the same name. It has been adapted into anime movies, an anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: Arise and many other spin-offs and shorts.

 

It also had it’s fair share of games. There’s simply titled Ghost in the Shell for the PlayStation 1 where you played the role of series mascot Fuchikoma (Tachikoma in the movies). Then there’s Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for the PlayStation 2 and first person shooter Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for the PSP. And finally, Ghost in the Shell: First Assault – Stand Alone Complex Online, upcoming free-to-play online FPS set to release worldwide on Steam.

 

The first publicity photo appeared showing Johansson with her new haircut for the movie.

 

Scarlett Johansson plays The Major in Ghost in the Shell from Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures in theaters March 31, 2017.

Other confirmed actors for the movie are Michael Pitt for the role of the Laughing Man, Pilou Asbæk as Batou, Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki, Joseph Naufahu as Police Commander Johns and Christopher Obi as Ambassador Kiyoshi.
