Sega May Re-Release Shenmue 1 and 2
After the record-shattering success of the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter, Sega seems to be considering re-releasing the cult classic titles Shenmue 1 and 2.
During SEGA Central, Dan Sheridan, Sega’s Community & Social Marketing Manager, said the following:
Sadly it’s not as simple as porting the games to the current platforms, as we need to ensure that any HD remaster lives up to the quality of the original titles. With games as immersive as Shenmue 1 and 2, there are further complications from licensed products that were included in the original games. That said, we’d love to do it and are currently investigating how to make it a reality.
Considering sheer scale of the world and number of product placement in the original games, it may indeed require a bit of work to get everything up and ready for an HD re-release. The Japanese version of the game included Coca-Cola vending machines, Timex watches and Case Logic products among many others. While it would be a shame to see these elements gone, mainly because they added to the game’s realism, we’d rather see this dream come into fruition.
Until the day that Sega finally releases these games on modern platforms, we can get a glimpse of what we may expect from this fan remake.
