Six of the best gyarus in anime and manga

Something I have come to love throughout my time watching anime and reading manga is my love for wholesome gyaru characters. I don’t know if it’s the element of surprise that comes with having preconceived judgments on a certain type of character in an anime, or if it’s just aesthetic. All I know is that if there is a wholesome gyaru series, you know I’d be checking it out!

With that said, today I will be listing 6 of the greatest gyaru characters in anime and manga! Let’s get started!

Best gyaru in manga and anime

Sakura Hibiki – How Heavy are the Dumbbells You Lift?

How Heavy are the Dumbbells You Lift? was an anime that took the world by storm with its hilarious comedy, cute girls, and banger opening that all sat nicely on top of a series that actually, at the core of it, taught people about exercising! We follow the journey of tanned cutie Sakura Hibiki, a girl who has a big ol’ appetite and, after realising she has put some weight on, decides to hit the gym.

Hibiki follows along the lines of a typical gyaru cliche — she isn’t the greatest when it comes to her studies. What she enjoys, she REALLY enjoys and she typically finds it hard to motivate herself to do things she doesn’t want to do. However, she manages to commit herself to exercise and realises some of her latent strengths that were just hiding underneath the surface.

Anjou Anna – Yancha Gal no Anjou-san

One of few series on that list that I sincerely hope receive an anime adaptation in the near future, Yancha Gal no Anjou-san centers around the romance between Anjou, our resident gyaru, and Seto, the nerdy, quiet guy in class. Anjou is your classic attractive, confident, popular, and cheery girl. She has all the qualities that would make you think otherwise, however, she is an incredibly kind person and it’s this part of her personality that starts the character’s romance.

If I had to classify Anjou, she would definitely fall into the more teasing type of gyaru character who constantly pokes at the male lead in order to get some kind of reaction out of them. Seto thinks maybe she is just trying to make fun of him, but he doesn’t realize that it’s these reactions of his that lead her to constantly seek his company.

Galko-chan – Please Tell Me! Galko-chan!

Most of the series I have listed here have some element of romance to them, whether it be the main focus, layered with comedy, or what have you. Galko-chan is more of a slice-of-life series that simply focuses on the daily lives of Galko, the gyaru, and her two friends Otako (the otaku) and Ojou (the rich girl) — I know, the naming convention in the series is quite genius.

What’s fun about this series, and Galko specifically, is that while she looks like someone with a wild and promiscuous personality, she is actually extremely innocent and is quite embarrassed when talking about things of an intimate nature. Her shenanigans with Otako and Ojou make for some entertaining moments though!

Minami Fuyuki – Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!

I remember coming across this series when it had only just started its serialisation in 2019 and I’m so happy that I did because I really enjoy it! It focuses on Tsubasa, a character who moves from Tokyo to the cold region of Hokkaido to live with his grandmother while he attends school there. On arrival, he meets Fuyuki, a gyaru who, even in the immense cold, still wears her mini skirt because it’s cute, and refuses to wear gloves so that she can use her phone.

Fuyuki is extremely kind and welcoming, which is why she becomes all too quickly infatuated with our main boy Tsubasa. Despite being so confident and outgoing, she worries slightly that Hokkaido won’t be very fun for Tsubasa — however, he loves everything she shows him! The series suddenly turns into the couple going on dates in different places in Hokkaido as their love blossoms — It’s extremely cute.

Okazaki Miku – Gal Gohan

You may not be aware of this, but our wonderful editor, Pete, has written a whole load of pieces on this series after I recommended it to him. (It’s true – Ed.) What began as taster piece Getting into Gal Gohan quickly turned into a complete review of the entire series — if that doesn’t tell you how great this series, and specifically Miku, is then I don’t know how else I can convince you.

This one, in particular, is an absolute favorite of mine for numerous reasons — it’s consistently satisfying to read, has a great mix of romance and comedy while still mixing in some serious tones, and Miku is top-tier gyaru! She is the typical ditzy type whose main pride is her identity as a gyaru. While all of her other teachers have given up on her as a student, her love interest and teacher show her that is perfectly capable. So begins their romantic journey!

Kitagawa Marin – My Dress-Up Darling

I don’t think there is anyone in the world who watches anime that doesn’t know who this absolute gyaru-goddess is at the moment. She is probably the best girl of the year (Yor says hello – Ed.), and while I hold a special place in my heart for Miku and Fuyuki above, Marin Kitagawa might just edge it out on top when it comes to my own personal bias.

I adore this character with my entire being — she is adorable, confident, cute, and hilarious, but most of all, she is extremely supportive of others and their passions. Marin loves cosplay, but no one in her friend group shares this passion, so she knows what it’s like to enjoy something that you basically have to hide from others. This is what makes her such a wonderful partner to the main character Gojo, who has only ever been made fun of for his passions. It’s a wonderful series with a beautifully organic romance that is totally believable — Marin is one of the all-time greats!
