Sony potentially buying light novel powerhouse Kadokawa

According to a report from Reuters, Sony is in talks to acquire Japanese multimedia company Kadokawa.

While the report states that talks for the acquisition are currently underway, both companies have declined to comment at this time.

Kadokawa is involved with a lot of media in Japan, primarily in the form of light novels and anime. Many of the titles they own like Re:Zero and Mushoku Tensei have since been licensed out for successful anime adaptions as well.

The company also owns a majority stake in FromSoftware, who’s latest titles Elden Ring and Armored Core VI have performed extremely well globally.

If this purchase goes through, Sony would increase its monopoly on Japanese media in the west. It already acquired Crunchyroll back in 2021, which in turn absorbed a number of other companies into its branding (such as Manga UK during the same year.)
