Yes, Star Ocean 3 Remaster is an actual thing that Square Enix have very sensibly announced that they’re doing. They dropped the news towards the end of tri-Ace’s special Star Ocean stream, so you can take a look at the video to see some comparisons! I’ll grab some screens to post here myself too.
Star Ocean 3 is also known by its full and silly long title Star Ocean: Till the End of Time. This remastered version of the game will be known as Star Ocean: Till the End of Time Director’s Cut, and will release on PlayStation 4.
Why is Star Ocean 3 Remaster such a big deal? Well, it’s the one everyone goes on about as being the best one (and they’re probably right). It’s only ever been on PlayStation 2, which makes playing it a bit of a hassle. It seems to occasionally spike in rarity too, but not as much as some other still pretty unobtainable games (my heart weeps for Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Skies of Arcadia Legends to this day). Also response has been pretty lukewarm towards the last two Star Ocean games, so it’s nice to see love being thrown back towards this one.
Star Ocean: Till the End of Time Director’s Cut will be a digital only title even in Japan, and it seems that the only real changes are to the resolution, which they say they’ve had help with from Sony.
Mechanically everything should remain the same. They’ve not made mention of any big new additions, or of a release date, so we’ll just have to wait and see if this Director’s Cut has any new surprises in store! No word yet on an English version, though, but fingers crossed.
