Steins;Gate guide and walkthrough

As much as Okabe would like to make out that the “choice of Steins;Gate” is a singular one, anyone who has played this incredible visual novel will know that there are a lot of decisions to make along the way. So let us help with this comprehensive Steins;Gate guide!

Steins;Gate was originally released in Japan in 2009 and first localised in 2014. We’re providing this guide to this all-time classic for your convenience! Enjoy!

This Steins;Gate guide focuses on getting all achievements and endings in a single playthrough with judicious saving. Note that there are a few minor bits of dialogue you might miss by following this Steins;Gate guide exclusively, so feel free to experiment or explore the game across multiple playthroughs. Also note that this Steins;Gate guide is based on the 2014 PC localisation, so there may be some minor differences if you’re playing on PS3 or Vita.

Chapter 1

Follow our Steins;Gate guide by making the appropriate decisions indicated below, either by using Okabe’s phone or performing the actions described.

  • When setting the timer on the PhoneWave, enter anything other than “120#” 10 times for the “Homerun-level Clumsiness” achievement.
  • When you receive an email from Mayuri about “Upa,” reply with “Upa” then open the attachment from the reply she sends you for the “RaiNet’s Mascot” achievement.
  • When Faris emails you about “the final battle,” reply with “Red Southern Cross” then open the attachment from the reply she sends you to make progress on the “Princesses of Chaos” achievement.
  • When Mayuri emails you with the subject “It’s interesting,” open the attachment to make progress on the “Hero of RaiNet” achievement.

Chapter 2

Most of the choices in this chapter relate to achievements; keep following the Steins;Gate guide to maximise your playthrough!

  • When you receive an email from Faris about “Original Sin level” reply with “2000.”
  • When you receive an email from Luka saying “I made sweets” reply with “family.”
  • When Faris emails you again, open the attachment to make progress on the “Songs of Chaos” achievement.
  • When Mayuri calls you, answer it.
  • When Luka emails you with the subject “My family” reply with “my sister.”
  • When Kurisu calls (Okabe has her in his phone as “Assistant”) answer it.
  • When Moeka sends you a message asking “Got info?” read it to see a scene with Kurisu.
  • When Luka emails you with the subject “About my older sister” you should get the “Cruel Sister” achievement. Reply with “you know.”

Chapter 3

SAVE at the start of this chapter before you continue to follow our Steins;Gate guide, as there’s a branching point with Faris’ email messages.

  • When Faris emails you to say “PHANTASM is the cat’s meow!” reply with “theme song” followed by “RaiNet Kakeru” on her next message to make progress on the “Hero of RaiNet” achievement.
  • Alternatively, reply with “PHANTASM” followed by “chaos” to make progress on “Songs of Chaos.”
  • When Luka emails you “About frogs” reply with “Gero Froggies.”
  • When Luka emails you with “more news about the frogs,” open the attachment to make progress on the “Froggy Fad Demise” achievement.
  • When Daru calls, answer it to see a scene with him and Mayuri, or ignore it for a scene with Kurisu.

Chapter 4

SAVE at the start of this chapter as the choices for some achievements and the choices needed for the True Ending are mutually exclusive. Keep your eyes on our Steins;Gate guide to make sure you don’t go astray!

  • When Mayuri emails you about lotteries, reply with “magazine.”
  • When Luka emails you about RaiNet, open the attachment to make progress on the “Hero of RaiNet” achievement.
  • When Kurisu emails you asking “Did you write it?” reply with “report” and, later in the chapter, “cup noodles” to receive the “Discontinuous Qualia” achievement. You will not reach the True Ending if you make this choice.
  • To trigger one of the True Ending flags, instead reply with “scientist” then later “bad scientist,” “do better,” “outsider,” “disgrace” and “why am I still here?” to her subsequent mails. You’ll also get the “Genius Girl’s Melancholy” achievement.
  • When Suzuha emails you about Akihabara, reply “peaceful” and receive her next message to get the “Warrior Girls’ Pride” achievement.
  • When Faris emails you about “Sign of increasing misfortune” reply with “he.”
  • When Mayuri emails you about “Going out” reply with “Crunchy-kun.”
  • When Mayuri emails you about Luka, which may be partway through the subsequent exchanges with Faris, reply with “Kakeru-kun” and open the attachment on her next message to make progress on the “Hero of RaiNet” achievement.
  • When Faris emails you again about “abilities” reply with “NyanNyanian” to get the “Cat’s Tea Time” achievement when you receive her next message.
  • Alternatively, reply with “Chinchilla Star” then “Ep 8” to her next message, then open the attachment on the message after that to finish off the “Hero of RaiNet” achievement.

Chapter 5

No real branches in this chapter, but you will see some different scenes depending on whether or not you triggered the True Ending flag in the previous chapter. You may still wish to save if you’re gathering achievements; keep following the Steins;Gate guide for the full rundown.

  • When Faris calls, answer it for a rather chuunibyou chat.
  • If you triggered the True Ending flag last chapter, Kurisu will email you about “plans.” Reply with “traveling expenses” and read her next message (titled “Idiot!”) to which you don’t need to reply. Later, you’ll receive another message from her, and this will unlock the second True Ending flag.
  • If you didn’t trigger the True Ending flag in the last chapter, you’ll get an email from Mayuri saying “what made me happy today” — reply with “cosplay” and read the next message to get the “Passions Best Forgotten” achievement.
  • Alternatively, reply with “Fubuki-chan and Kaede-chan” then open the attachment on her next message to receive the “Princesses of Chaos” achievement.
  • When Faris emails you about “ComiMa,” reply with “collapsing” and open the attachment on her next message to receive the “Songs of Chaos” achievement.

Chapter 6

SAVE! This chapter gives you the opportunity to reach an ending, and there are several different scenes based on the choices you make. Save if you want to see them all, and keep one eye on our Steins;Gate guide to make sure you don’t miss anything!

  • Shortly after the line “…Did it work?” you’ll have the option to do nothing or call Mayuri. If you do nothing, you’ll see an extra scene.
  • At the line “I should call or send a mail” call Luka for an extra scene.
  • At the line “I wonder how the other lab mems are progressing,” call Kurisu, Mayuri or Daru for a scene with them, or do nothing for a scene with Suzuha.
  • When given the option to send the D-Mail at the end of the chapter, do nothing to reach Suzuha’s ending and finish the game.
  • Alternatively, send the D-Mail to continue.

Chapter 7

SAVE! This is another chapter where achievement-related choices and True Ending choices are mutually exclusive. Keep this Steins;Gate guide by your side while you play to stay safe.

  • If you’ve picked up the two True Ending flags available so far, Kurisu will email you about “The key.” Reply “I don’t have a key” then “frog” to her next message, then open the attachment on the message after that to make progress on the “Froggy Fad Demise” achievement. Then reload your save.
  • Now reply with “home” then “Hyahha” to her next message, then “I’m gonna give it to you straight” to the one after that, then open the attachment to her “Blazing heat!” message to finish off the “Froggy Fad Demise” achievement.
  • Alternatively, choose “I don’t have a key” then “security” to her next message, then “reality” to the message after that, then read the final reply for the third True Ending flag.
  • When Daru calls, answer it for an extra scene.
  • When Kurisu calls, answer it for a scene with her, or ignore it for a scene with Faris.
  • When given the option to send the D-Mail at the end of the chapter, do nothing to reach Faris’ ending and finish the game.
  • Alternatively, send the D-Mail to continue.

Chapter 8

SAVE! There’s another ending to reach in this chapter. The Steins;Gate guide will point you in the right direction!

  • If you’ve got the three True Ending flags up until now, Kurisu will email you. Read it, then read her next message later in the chapter for the fourth True Ending flag.
  • When you have the option of whether or not to call the PhoneWave (name subject to change) do nothing to receive an extra call from Daru.
  • After the line “Will you… remember me?” do not call the PhoneWave to reach Luka’s ending and finish the game.
  • Alternatively, call the PhoneWave to continue.

Chapter 9

Only minor branches in this chapter. Save if you want to be thorough and explore all options, and keep following the Steins;Gate guide to stay on the right path.

  • At the line “Should I really leap now?” do nothing for an extra scene, during which Kurisu will call you. Answer it for another extra scene.
  • When Kurisu calls later in the chapter, ignore it for a scene with Moeka.
  • If you’ve got all four True Ending flags up until now, Kurisu will email you with the subject “Contact me, idiot!” Reply with “worried” and read her next message for the fifth True Ending flag.
  • When given the option to send the D-Mail at the end of the chapter, do nothing for an extra scene and CG.

Chapter 10

If you have no True Ending flags when you reach the start of this chapter, you’re locked in to Mayuri’s ending. Otherwise, you’ll see either Kurisu’s or the True ending.

  • If you have five of the six True Ending flags, reply “where you are” to Kurisu’s message to lock in the True Ending.
  • When Mayuri calls, answer it for an extra scene.
  • Finally, your ending will be determined by how many True Ending flags you have. If you have none, you’ll get Mayuri’s ending. if you have 1-5, you’ll get Kurisu’s ending. If you have all six, you’ll get the True Ending.
