To be clear, that’s just a Super Robot Wars OG The Moon Dwellers English version that’s been announced, not a western release. But for many an English language Asian version of the game alone is a big deal. And it is a big deal.
The Super Robot Wars series is one of the best mech games in Japan. But, due to its origins as a crossover game featuring mechs from many different series its always been plagued with licensing issues whenever they’ve tried to bring it out of Japan. That’s why it’s always been a favourite among importers, despite the language barrier.
But that’s where the OG comes in. And no, I don’t mean Original Gangsta. I mean Original Generation. The series’ original characters, not licensed from other franchises, have been brought together into a spin-off series. Naturally the lack of licensing issues makes it much more manageable for Bandai Namco to bring it out wherever they please. Super Robot Wars OG games have released in the west previously, though smaller releases on the Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS, handled by Atlus.
Of course, this doesn’t mean it will come out in the west. But for a series that so frequently crops up in lists of “must import Japanese exclusives” it’s great news to see a release where importers with have a lesser language barrier to deal with. It’ll be coming out on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3, which are both region free. Hopefully there will be more suprises to come as part of the Super Robot Wars 25th anniversary.
