Swords of Legends Online goes free to play with upcoming expansion

Gameforge has announced that Xianxia MMORPG Swords of Legends Online will be moving to a free to play model from February 24, 2022.

According to the announcement, monetisation will still remain cosmetic-only, including the release of future Battle Passes. Owners of Swords of Legends Online will be given bonus items, regardless of the version they bought — said items have not been revealed at this time.

In addition to this, the game will also see the release of Update 2.0, bringing more content over from the Chinese version. This includes the Fox Mage and Warrior classes, additional story content, and a number of new zones.

Swords of Legends Online’s active playerbase has shrunk considerably since launch (Steam Charts lists a peak player count of just 804 over the last 30 days). Part of this can be attributed to the many issues at launch, such as a poor localisation and unreliable North American servers.

It remains to be seen whether this update will help keep the game going in the long run. However, releasing during February might end up being the final nail in the coffin, with Amazon’s Lost Ark arriving a few weeks before Swords of Legends Online 2.0.
