The Closing Shift walkthrough and guide

Chilla’s Art games are great little horror adventures, as you’ll know if you’ve played any of them. But sometimes they can be a little tricky to get through! The Closing Shift, the latest release in the range at the time of writing, is no exception — so with that in mind we’ve prepared a helpful The Closing Shift walkthrough to help you through your time on the job at Chilla’s Coffee.

Our The Closing Shift walkthrough is split into a couple of main sections: some important skills and concepts you’ll need to learn and make use of throughout the game, and a complete walkthrough of what to do when in order to progress through the story. So let’s get started!

The Closing Shift walkthrough: basic skills

Here are some important things you will need to know while working at Chilla’s Coffee.

Checking orders: Collect the Order Stickers from the printer next to the till. Press TAB to open your inventory and see what the customer ordered.

Checking recipes: The whiteboard in the back room displays all the ingredients required to make all the different drinks in the game.

Checking what you’ve already put in a cup: Pick up the Hot or Cold Cup. Press TAB to open your inventory, scroll to the cup and look at the bottom of the screen to see all the individual ingredients you’ve already added.

Pouring coffee: Take a Hot or Cold Cup according to the drink you’re making and place it in front of the coffee machine.

Steaming milk: Take a Milk Jug. Place it on the flat surface in front of the Milk Steamer. Take a Milk carton from the refrigerator on the right. Use the Milk carton on the Milk Jug. Then pick up the Milk Jug once the steaming is done.

Blending ice: Take a Blender Cup. Place it on a flat surface — there’s one in front of the blender. Open the Ice Refrigerator. Pick up some Ice. Use the Ice on the Blender Cup. Pick up the Blender Cup and place it in the Blender.

Serving a hot drink: Take a Hot Cup, place it down on a flat surface and add ingredients one at a time. Take a Hot Cup Lid, use it on the Hot Cup, pick up the Hot Cup, place it on the counter in front of the customer, use the appropriate Order Sticker on the Hot Cup.

Serving a cold drink: Take a Cold Cup, place it down on a flat surface and add ingredients one at a time. Take a Cold Cup Lid, use it on the Cold Cup, pick up the Cold Cup, place it on the counter in front of the customer, use the appropriate Order Sticker on the Cold Cup.

Serving food: Open the pastry cabinet. Pick up the requested pastry. Use the pastry on the bags next to the pastry cabinet. Place the bagged pastry on the counter in front of the customer, use the appropriate Order Sticker on the bagged pastry.

If you make a mistake: Throw the unwanted ingredient or drink in the trash can near the customer counter. You cannot serve an incorrect drink; you’ll hear a buzzer when you attempt to use the Order Sticker if you’ve done something wrong.

The Closing Shift walkthrough: first shift

Take a moment to familiarise yourself with your apartment, but there’s nothing you actually need to do here right now. Simply use the front door and choose “Leave apartment” when you’re ready to go.

Walk along your balcony and all the way down the stairs — you’ll hear a mobile phone ringing as you descend. When you reach the bottom of the stairs, pick up the phone.

Walk around the back of your apartment building and into the car park. In the shadows near the bike shed is a man who is “looking for something”. Give him the phone. Then get in your car.

When you arrive at Chilla’s Coffee, take a moment to look around outside; there are decorations with Patreon supporters hanging in the trees near the road. Enter Chilla’s Coffee either via the front door or the back fire exit. Take a moment to look around and familiarise yourself with the layout.

Go behind the counter and open the door to the back room. Open the right-hand locker and put your things away. Talk to Funahashi-senpai to get a chewing out for being late. Once you’ve done both of these things, Funahashi-senpai will leave and your shift will start as soon as you walk back into the main room of Chilla’s Coffee — you’ll know your shift has started because the music will begin playing.

While you’re on shift, you won’t be able to come out from behind the counter or leave via the fire exit in the store room, but you can go into the back room to check the tutorial videos and the recipes on the whiteboard if you need to.

When you’re ready, speak to your first customer and take his Order Stickers from the printer. He wants a Coffee (Hot Cup, Coffee, Hot Cup Lid) and a Latte (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Hot Cup Lid). Make the drinks and serve them to him at the far end of the counter.

Your next customer wants a “Dark Mocha Chip Chillappuccino”, which is actually listed as a “Chocolate Chip Chillappucino” on the recipe board. Grab the Order Sticker, then take a Cold Cup, add Blended Ice, Coffee, Milk (not steamed!), Chocolate Sauce and Cocoa Powder to the cup, then add a Cold Cup Lid and serve.

Next, four students will arrive and rattle off a confusing order. Your dialogue option doesn’t really matter, but if you want to be correct, the answer is the second option with the most items: Matcha Chillappuccino (Cold Cup, Blended Ice, unsteamed Milk, Matcha Powder, Whipped Cream, Cold Cup Lid), Salted Caramel Mocha (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Caramel Syrup, Hazelnut Syrup, Chocolate Sauce, Hot Cup Lid), White Mocha (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, White Chocolate Sauce), Matcha Cake, Pumpkin Cake, American Waffle, American Apple Pie. If you can’t find the Whipped Cream, it’s in the refrigerator under the Blender.

Your final customer of the night is private investigator Hasaku. He won’t speak his order, it’ll just appear as an Order Sticker in the printer, so grab it and get to work on his Latte (Hot Cup, Coffee Steamed Milk, Hot Cup Lid) and serve it up to him.

Now it’s time to sweep the floor. Go into the back room, open the left locker and take the broom. Use the broom on the dirty spots on the floor — hold down the mouse button until the meter clears. When you’re done, the lights will go out, so fumble your way through to the back room and into the storeroom; the breaker is on the back wall, so flip the switch to return things to normal.

Pick up the discarded cartons of Milk on the floor and return them to the refrigerator behind the counter. And that’s the end of your first shift!

The Closing Shift walkthrough: second shift

After a short cutscene, you’ll be back in your apartment. Simply head on out when you’re ready. Jump right in your car and go to work — though note the strange van parked in the car park.

Head inside Chilla’s Coffee, apologise to Funahashi-senpai for being late again, then put your things away in your locker to start your shift.

Speak to your first customer. He won’t speak his order, so just grab his Order Stickers and get to work. Note the creepy dude in the hoodie hanging around outside, though there’s nothing you can do about this right now.

Your customer wants an American Waffle, a Caramel Toffee American Scone, an American Apple Pie and a Coffee (Hot Cup, Coffee, Hot Lid). Once his order is complete, creepy dude in the background will wander off and you can enjoy a touch of nihongo jozu.

After he’s gone, creepy dude will come into the shop and place an order without saying anything. Collect his Order Stickers, which are for a Vanilla Chillappuccino (Cold Cup, Blended Ice, unsteamed Milk, Vanilla Syrup, Vanilla Powder, Cold Lid) and two glasses of Milk (Cold Cup, unsteamed Milk, Cold Lid). Serve him and note that he heads off to a table around the corner where you can’t see him.

No time to worry about that now, because your next customer is arriving. After he hits on you, be all business and ask him to order a Chillappuccino to make him go away in a huff, or give him a fake phone number to make him place an order for a Caramel Macchiato (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Caramel Syrup, Caramel Sauce, Hot Lid)

Now your shift’s over, so go into the back room and pick up all the Trash. Take it out of the fire exit and put it all in the dumpster — note the van in the car park, though. Then head back into the store, take the Cleaning Rag from the locker on the left in the back room and clean all the dirty tables. Be sure to also pick up the Photo on the table where creepy dude was sitting — did we actually see him leave…?

The Closing Shift walkthrough: third shift

Head on out the door as usual when you’re ready and go down the stairs. Be prepared for a little surprise at the bottom.

Speak to the mother and admire her ugly baby. Then head around back into the car park — note that a familiar van is there once again. Hop into your car and go to work.

Speak with Funahashi-senpai in the back room and put your things away as usual, then your shift will begin

Three JKs will arrive and have a bit of a chat before actually placing an order. Once again, don’t worry if you don’t remember all of it, because there’ll be an Order Sticker for every item.

The girls want a Matcha Chillappuccino (Cold Cup, Blended Ice, unsteamed Milk, Matcha Powder, Whipped Cream, Cold Lid), a Strawberry and Cream Roll, a Strawberry Churro, a Coffee with Whipped Cream (Hot Cup, Coffee, Whipped Cream, Hot Lid) and a Caramel Macchiato (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Caramel Syrup, Caramel Sauce). When you’ve served them all, note that you can “overhear” their conversation in the background through the floating subtitles while you continue to work.

Next up, a guy will wander in and stare at the racks of bagged coffee. Shortly after, another guy will come in and not have enough money to pay for his order. The first guy will offer to pay for him and make one of the worst puns ever. You can then serve them both — a simple Latte (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Hot Lid) and a Vanilla Latte (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Vanilla Syrup, Hot Lid). Easy, right?

Shortly after that, it’s time for the end of your shift, so grab the Cleaning Rag from the locker on the left in the back room and clean up the tables. When you’re done, you’ll hear a weird noise — it’s coming from the camera overlooking the drive-through. Go check the monitor to see what’s up.

The sensible thing to do now would be to run, of course, but you’re in a horror game so you’re not about to do the sensible thing. Go outside and check the drive-through area — specifically the menu board. You’ll find a “Creepy Text” there — read it. And that’s a delightful way to end your shift, no?

The Closing Shift walkthrough: fourth shift?

After the short cutscene — are you getting the picture yet? — you’ll be back in your apartment. Your doorbell will ring and there’ll be another Creepy Text waiting for you. Read it, then continue the tradition of being an idiotic horror protagonist by going outside.

Head down to the car park and attempt to use your car. It won’t start, so you’ll need to take the bus. Head back to the front of the apartment building and turn right, then follow the side streets until you reach the bus stop. Ride the bus to work — make sure to sneak a quick glance in the bus’ windows as it drives off to see what your fellow passenger was really staring at!

Head inside CHilla’s Coffee and put your things away in the locker, then head to the bathroom to find Funahashi-senpai. Speak with him then start your shift.

The first person to enter will be unsettlingly familiar, and he won’t order anything. Just stay out of his way and let him sit down. Before long, a drive-through customer will arrive. Serving him is almost exactly the same as serving customers in the store, but you need to place the drinks on the counter by the drive-through window to serve them with the Order Stickers.

Car Man wants two Caramel Macchiatos (Hot Cup, Steamed Milk, Coffee, Caramel Syrup, Caramel Sauce, Hot Lid), and two Caramel Toffee American Scones. Serve him and note that your friend is still very much present.

A short while after, a woman will arrive, offer you a Rosary Bracelet and place an order; your friend will depart while you’re having this conversation. She wants a Green Tea Latte (Hot Cup, Steamed Milk, Matcha Powder, Vanilla Syrup, Hot Lid) and an American Waffle.

Next up is an idol, who will proposition you and then place an order for a Salted Caramel Mocha (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Caramel Syrup, Hazelnut Syrup, Chocolate Sauce, Hot Lid). Serve her and she’ll depart.

Next, you’ll encounter the rather peculiar Mametaro. Navigate your way through the conversation as you see fit to get rid of him — bonus points if you can find the untranslated dialogue option — and that’s the end of another shift.

This time you need to take out the trash from the back room to the dumpster — out the fire exit in the storeroom is the quickest route — and clean the toilet. Pick up the Toilet Cleaning Products from the cleaning locker, then clean the Dirty Toilet. Then head into the stock room and pick up the Toilet Roll. Use the Toilet Roll on the empty holder to finish the job.

Go back behind the counter and the lights will go out again. Shadowy figures will enter the store and repeatedly ask for Lattes (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Hot Lid) so serve them until the timer expires and you’ve seen off the last of them.

Now head into the storeroom and attempt to use the breaker — it won’t work, and what’s worse, you’ll find yourself locked in. Flail around for a bit trying all the doors and hitting the breaker. Eventually when you look down one of the aisles of shelves towards the “…” door you haven’t been able to open for the whole game, you’ll see a pair of eyes in the dark. And…?

The Closing Shift walkthrough: final shift

Leave your apartment and take your car — the improved weather means that it’s working today. Head into the store; Funahashi-senpai is nowhere to be seen and, strangely, your things are already in your locker.

Head front of house and speak with your detective friend — he doesn’t want anything to drink.

After he heads off, a pair of office ladies will arrive; they want a Salted Caramel Mocha (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Caramel Syrup, Hazelnut Syrup, Chocolate Sauce, Hot Lid) and a Chocolate Chip Chillappuccino (Cold Cup, Blended Ice, unsteamed Milk, Chocolate Sauce, Cocoa Powder, Cold Lid). Note what they say about the person outside taking photographs.

Your next visitor will be familiar from earlier in the game, but note that her baby isn’t in the pushchair and she seems to be upset. She’ll say nothing but an Order Sticker will appear; serve her the Salted Caramel Mocha (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Caramel Syrup, Hazelnut Syrup, Chocolate Sauce, Hot Lid) that she wants.

Next up a woman named Machiko will arrive and ask for “the usual”, which is a Salted Caramel Mocha (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Caramel Syrup, Hazelnut Syrup, Chocolate Sauce, Hot Lid — sick of these yet?) along with a Caramel Macchiato (Hot Cup, Coffee, Steamed Milk, Caramel Syrup, Caramel Sauce, Hot Lid) and a Sweet Red Beans and Butter Bread. Serve her and note what she says about there being someone on the roof.

Once she leaves, head into the back room and check your locker. Your things are gone! Head into the storeroom and pick up the ladder in the corner, then head out the fire exit and around the back of the drive-through road. Use the ladder on the wall with the debris around it and climb up.

When up on the roof, note the pile of blocks you can climb up onto the roof edge with — you don’t need these yet, but you will shortly. Examine the open vent in the roof and climb down. Investigate the room you find until you discover the creepy corner — you’ll know it when you see it. Examine the photos on the walls… yeah, time to get out of here.

Unlock and open the door in the creepy room to get back into the stockroom. Grab the Product Scanner from the table in the back room. Pick up all the pastries from the pastry cabinet and throw them in the trash behind the counter. Scan all the sandwiches around the front of the pastry cabinet with the Product Scanner. Take the money from the till and use it on the cash-counting machine in the back room. Then, when prompted, flip the sign to “closed”. Time for the final showdown!

The Closing Shift walkthrough: grand finale

BAD END 1: After your friend appears at the front door, attempt to escape out of the fire exit at the back. You can retry from flipping the sign after this.

BAD END 2: Go into the creepy room out the back and pick up the screwdriver from the bedding. Go into the bathroom and use the screwdriver on the vent. You’ll end up outside the drive-through area, and your car key will be on the floor. Pick it up and get in your car.

GOOD(?) END: Go into the storeroom and pick up the ladder. Use it in the creepy room under the vent. Climb up onto the roof and take a brick. Use the stack of bricks to climb onto the roof edge, creep around the side until you see your friend (you can’t fall off, don’t worry) and let him have it.

After the cutscene go out the window onto your balcony and note that your phone appears to be down in the car park. Leave your apartment and head down into the car park to retrieve it. Return to your apartment and walk into your living room.
