I know it may be a slight bit late to list the Top 5 most anticipated 2020 games but there are a lot of games slated to come out this year and I thought it would be cool to share the 5 that I am looking forward to the most. Let’s start with the honorable mentions!
My Hero One’s Justice 2
Starting off with a game that is coming out this week, on March 13 – My Hero One’s Justice 2. I am really looking forward to this one since I really enjoyed playing the original One’s Justice when I imported it via the Japanese eShop in August of 2018 ahead of the EU and US launch in October.
There’s plenty of new characters getting added like Mirio Togata, Nejire Hado, Tamaki Amajiki, Kai Chisaki, Gang Orca, Camie Utsushimi, Mina Ashido, Kendo Rappa and many others. Old characters are also getting new variations and re-balanced with new moves and there’s a whole host of changes including Team Plus Ultra’s when you have a specific team of characters fighting together.
I do hope the game is as good if not better than the original as I do consider One’s Justice one of the best arena fighters.
Granblue Fantasy: Versus
This is a game I have been looking forward to for a long time, especially after playing the Closed Beta. The game looks absolutely beautiful with the trademark Arc System Works 2.5D Style and the gameplay, while different from the usual Arc System works fare of high-speed action, is still fun. The RPG mode also really piques my interest as the combat system does translate well into a Beat’em Up RPG style mode.
The game is slated to come out on PC via Steam this week and the 27th of March on PS4 for the EU. It sure has been a long wait for me as a Dutch European Otaku but I can’t wait for the 27th!
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4
I have enjoyed a lot of the One Piece Pirate Warriors games and I’m definitely looking forward to this one to see what it brings to the table as it does look like it changes a lot of the formula that was established in Pirate Warriors 3. But in general, the Pirate Warriors spin-off Musou games have been an enjoyable experience for me as a fan of the genre.
Top 5 Most Anticipated Games 2020
Now with the honorable mentions out of the way let’s get into the list. Keep in mind that while I do put the games in certain spots I am pretty much excited for all of them equally.
5 – Fairy Tail
Gust is developing an RPG based on Fairy Tail a manga and anime that I have enjoyed up until a certain point and they even include my best girl Juvia in the party? Sign me up for it – I do think that a Turn-based RPG works with the theme of the manga and anime. That being Guilds, Friendship and magic. I am looking forward to this as Gust has been one of my favorite RPG developers with strong titles such as the Atelier franchise, the Ar Tonelico series, Blue Reflection and many other titles. This game is releasing June 25th 2020 for Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.
4 – Sword Art Online Alicization Lycoris
While my opinion of the SAO anime can be rather mixed, the games that are based on SAO have been really fun experiences to the point where the games themselves established their own canon known as the Gameverse. Alicization Lycoris being the newest title to be added to this canon and developed by Aquria. It looks amazing and the action RPG combat looks really good. So I am looking forward to this one!
3 – Persona 5 Royal
I enjoyed the original Persona 5 a lot when I had imported it on the Japanese PSN around it’s original 2016 release and I ended up forgetting to pick it up in English. Well, seems like I have a second chance to do so with Persona 5 Royal coming out relatively soon which adds a whole host of new things such as a third semester, reworked storyline, Persona’s having passive abilities, new party member, new social links and a few other things.
2 – Final Fantasy VII Remake
Of course I could hardly forget the fact that the Final Fantasy VII Remake is coming out this year too. The game looks amazing and I enjoyed playing the demo on my PS4 last week. The combat system was really fun to play around with and the ATB system is pretty neat. Now of course this remake is going to be split up in a few games with this game focusing on the Midgar portion of the original so we can expect a whole host of changes and new content to come our way when the game comes out on the 10th of April after a really long wait and development cycle!
1 – Guilty Gear Strive
I am a huge fan of Guilty Gear, ever since I got into the series as a young teenager in high school when the Guilty Gear XX Accent Core was the most recent version. Now, years after, Arc System Works returned to the series with Guilty Gear XRD -SIGN- and Guilty Gear XRD -Revelator-/Rev.2 introducing us to the trademark 2.5D Style the company is known for. Like all of these titles, Guilty Gear Strive looks really impressive and the gameplay looks pretty hype, backed with a fully vocal OST and even the addition of an English dub I am personally looking forward to getting this game whenever it comes out in Late 2020 (Or hope that I get into a Closed beta for the game)!
