Waifu Wednesday: Mikasa Ackerman (Attack on Titan)
Ask people about Attack on Titan and it will summon up all sorts of opinions. But there is one thing we can all agree on and that is the fact that Mikasa Ackerman is a highlight of the show. Cold. Calm. Always ready for a fight. Willing to do whatever it takes to keep those she loves safe. There is a lot to love about this woman, from her intense battle skills and dedication to her personal mission to keep Eren safe.
This week’s Waifu Wednesday is going to give you everything you need to know about Mikasa Ackerman, a fine addition to the list of women who scare me yet I can’t look away from.
Who is Mikasa Ackerman?
When Attack on Titan opens up, we are introduced to an idyllic existence for the Jaeger family that quickly comes crashing down around Mikasa and Eren as Titans attack their home and destroy everything around them in one of the most brutal opening sequences in modern anime. Later we find out that Mikasa has had her share of trauma and pain, which only serves to encourage her to close herself off from the rest of the world. She uses her natural talents and considerable skill with the show’s signature omni-gear for the sole purpose of protecting herself and Eren as they look to uncover the truth of the Titans.
Of course, there is more to Mikasa than her rage and hurt. She is deeply dedicated to her friends and has a strong sense of right and wrong, wanting to guide Eren toward the path of good when she can. However, if it is a choice between good and Eren, she will always lean toward her man. Loyal to a fault and one of the most terrifying combatants in the series, there are few people either in the walls or outside them that are her equal.
Why We Love Her
If you’ve kept up with some of my previous entries in the Waifu Wednesday series, you’ll know that I have a type and Mikasa fits into it almost perfectly. She quickly shows that she is among the best Titan Slayers that the Scout Regiment has to offer. She earns a space among the elites within a few missions, showing an almost superhuman strength and speed that few can match. Especially after the time skip, when she has spent some time working out and gains a physique few women in anime can match, she is on a whole other level compared to the rest of those inside the walls.
Mikasa Ackerman has the courage and skill to accomplish almost anything, becoming a force of nature that can turn the tide of battle all on her own. But she is still a person and has her own pain to contend with. Her insistence on clinging to Eren no matter where he goes and whatever he does is both her greatest source of strength and her greatest weakness.
Why You’ll Love Her
A buff woman with a force of will to rival the Titans themselves, Mikasa Ackerman is not someone to toy with. If you like your waifus a bit more intense than most, she’s one of the best examples in anime today. She’s not the kind of woman you want to be on the opposing side of, but that only makes her more appealing for men of culture like myself.
If you still need to get caught up on the anime before the second half of season 4 drops next year, the whole thing is streaming on Funimation. And if you’d like to catch up via the manga, you can read every chapter (and all the many spin offs) on the Azuki app.
