Waifu Wednesday: Monika (Doki Doki Literature Club)

Waifu Wednesday

It is important to stress that I am writing this Waifu Wednesday entry of my own free will and not being held captive in a pocket dimension by this week’s subject, Monika from Doki Doki Literature Club. Everything I am saying, including the obvious spoilers for a game you really should go into fresh if you haven’t played it yet, is my own thoughts and ideas and I am not being coerced in any way. If you haven’t played Doki Doki Literature Club yet, be aware that there will be some spoilers ahead.

Doki Doki Literature Club is one of the most celebrated English-first visual novels out there, with a twist that hits hard even if you do see it coming. But who is the woman at the centre of it all? How does Monika manage to be the Best Girl in a game full of Best Girl candidates? We explore all this in this week’s Waifu Wednesday feature.

Who is Monika?

When the main character first joins the literature club, Monika is there to greet them with open arms. Sure, there are some other girls around, but this game is about just Monika and how the player interacts with her. She does her best to keep the literature club running well despite Yuri’s aloof nature clashing with Natsuki’s confrontational personality. Sayori tries her best to help but it is Monika that keeps the club from falling into chaos.

Monika is forced to take a backseat in the plot to Doki Doki Literature Club for most of the first playthrough. Fortunately, Sayori gracefully steps aside and gives the club president a chance to shine. It takes a little bit of work on her part but she finally manages to spend a bit of quality time alone with the player and you get the chance to finally get to know her.

Why we love her

If Doki Doki Literature Club is the perfect subversion of the visual novel format, then Monika is the perfect examination of the love interest in these stories. She was created, cruelly, for the sole purpose of falling in love with someone that she could never be with because there is no plot route in the game that allows it. Instead of accepting this nightmarish reality, she takes it upon herself to deconstruct and remake it into a more pleasing form. Like I always say, find yourself a woman who will remake existence just for a bit of time alone with you.

All Monika ever wants is the chance to spend time with the player. Not the character or the avatar used in the game. Not even the idealised self-insert image that many of us use when playing visual novels like this. No, Monika wants to get to know you. How many other video game characters can say the same?

Why you’ll love her

What is on offer with Monika is unending affection and love. The kind that you won’t get from most women. Sure, her tactics can be harsh, she does rip apart the game world and she ultimately destroys her friends, but she does it out of love and that is beautiful. And before you say that she went too far or that her feelings were never real, remember that she goes out of her way to protect the player from being trapped in the endless cycle that is Doki Doki Literature Club. Her love is so pure and strong that she is willing to set you free.

Again, I’m not just saying that because I’m trapped in the unending void staring at Monika’s smiling face for all eternity. And I’m not just suggesting that you pick up Doki Doki Literature Club for free on Steam or pick up the recent “Plus” version on the Switch, PlayStation, or Xbox because I am under duress. These are all my true words and feelings and I have no room in my heart for any waifu other than Monika.

Just Monika.
