Waifu Wednesday: Rias Gremory (High School DxD)

Waifu Wednesday

Welcome once more to the greatest day of the week — Waifu Wednesday! Rias Gremory, everyone’s favourite devil princess, is who I will be gushing over today, and it’s keeping in theme with today’s Husbando piece. Harem anime is my guilty pleasure, and Highschool DxD has been a favourite of mine ever since the first season of the anime started airing — my enjoyment even got me reading the light novel.

We at Rice Digital love all things Waifu and Husbando and you can check out our archives for a ton of pieces on both. But for now, let’s get to know Rias Gremory a bit better!

Waifu Wednesday - Rias Gremory(Highschool DxD)

Who is Rias Gremory?

Rias Gremory is the main female protagonist of the Highschool DxD series and she is also the main love interest of the male protagonist, Issei Hyoudou.

Within the world of Highschool DxD there are 3 main factions: the Devils, Angels, and the Fallen Angels. Rias Gremory is not only a member of the Devil faction, but she is a member of one of the highest-ranking and most famous families within that faction.

As a high-ranking Devil, Rias has access to numerous powers and privileges available to her, one of these being the ability to create more Devils through the use of “Evil Pieces”. These pieces look exactly like the pieces on a chessboard and offer a Devil up to 15 servants, depending on the number of pieces used. In the case of Issei Hyoudou, Rias’ pawn, he consumed all of her available pawn pieces due to the power that resides within him.

Rias isn’t limited by the power of those beneath her; she is an overwhelmingly powerful individual thanks to a combination of her natural talent as a pure-blooded, high-ranking devil, and her hard work in honing her abilities.

Why we love Rias?

By all definitions, Rias has everything going well for her in life — she’s basically devil royalty, she has good friends in people like Akeno, her queen piece, and she is the legendary beauty of the schools that she attends. Rias has everything set up for her to be the unbearable “Ojou-sama” type character, yet she is a kind and forgiving person who does everything to protect those important to her.

While Rias is a proud member of the Gremory household, she doesn’t like the weight of her name being the only thing that she is known for or the only thing that people care about. Her reason for living in the human world is that there, she is simply known as Rias — just another girl.

Her past of men only ever taking interest in her because of her family name soured her opinion of them, and she began to lose interest in romance thinking that the possibility of love doesn’t exist for her. It’s after meeting Issei and falling in love with him that we get to see a whole new side to the character that only makes her more lovable.

Why you’ll love Rias

I mentioned that Rias had everything going for her, and this goes for her appearance as well — quite honestly, Rias is completely stacked. But it’s not just about that; if you’ve ever read any waifu piece of mine, you know how much I love powerful ladies who can look after themselves, and Rias is most definitely one of those.

One of her most appealing traits is the fact that she doesn’t just feel like a character that was made for the sake of fulfilling the tropes that harem anime all love to include. There has to be the tsundere, there has to be a kuudere, there has to be an ara ara~ onee-san (I love you Akeno), but Rias is a genuinely interesting character with multiple facets to her.

At the beginning of the story, she is this mysterious beauty that seems almost unattainable, but as she starts to come out of her shell after meeting Issei, we see her incredible kindness that extends to not only Issei, but all of her followers. She is this charismatic and reliable leader when she needs to be, then she can turn into one of the sexiest characters that anime has ever seen — then the next minute she is jealous over Issei having too much female attention. A truly legendary waifu.
