Waifu Wednesday: Vermeil (Vermeil in Gold)

Waifu Wednesday

Today I am going to be talking about Vermeil, a waifu from one of this season’s anime known as Vermeil in Gold! It’s been so long since I’ve picked up a random anime, but every now and then I like to just pick up something easy to watch that I know isn’t going to be the most thought-provoking or original concept out there — I just find and watch something that fulfils a certain role that I’m after at the time.

Here at Rice Digital our archive of waifu and husbando-loving articles grows each and every week. If you would like to check out some of the other pieces we’ve done on this wonderful subculture of anime then you can do so here for the ladies and here for the boys!

Vermeil in Gold

Who is Vermeil?

Vermeil is the main female protagonist of Vermeil in Gold. The show focuses on magicians attending a magical academy, where one of the main activities is summoning familiars. Alto, the main male lead, is on the brink of failing his summoning class after being unable to summon any form of familiar. Considering his otherwise excellent grades and performance in all other areas of his magical studies, this wouldn’t be ideal.

After a rather convenient book about summoning magic falls on his head in the library, Alto reads through the pages and decides to give it a shot without knowing exactly what he might summon into the world. The spell is a success, but what he summons is most definitely not a familiar but in fact a rather beautiful devil by the name of Vermeil.

Vermeil, as it just so happens, was trapped inside of the book, and it’s thanks to Alto’s summoning that she was able to escape her imprisonment. She immediately plants a kiss on our lucky man Alto and begins to drain some of his mana. She reveals that the reason he was unsuccessful in summoning a regular familiar was the density of his mana; it almost acts like poison to something which isn’t strong enough to withstand it.

Vermeil, being a devil — once considered the enemy of humanity — is able to handle it no problem, however, and thus she forms a contract with Alto.

Why we love Vermeil

I won’t lie here friends, there is one primary reason for why I even started this series and it’s that we are finally, FINALLY, seeing an onee-san/older woman character as both the main female lead and the target of the main character’s affection. Do you know how many harem anime I have seen in which the girls I backed lost?! Every. Single. One.

Vermeil is 100% the reason I even picked up this series and I promise you that she will be the reason you do too. The mature yet playful onee-san voice courtesy of the fantastic Uchida Maaya, the bust and booty we milf-loving degenerates would die for, and to top it all off she wears a goddamn virgin-killer sweater — whoever designed this character knew exactly what they were doing.

Vermeil isn’t all just looks either, she is a serious powerhouse when it comes to her strength and magical abilities, as would be expected of a devil. As she is Alto’s familiar though, she requires a supply of his mana in order to survive, and this is done through kissing and other forms of physical contact. The mana she drains is refined and condensed inside her body, and she can then return it to Alto in order to give him a massive boost to his power.

Why you’ll love Vermeil

I mentioned at the very beginning that I knew this series wasn’t going to be doing anything new or original, but it knows what it is and that’s fine by me. If you’re someone like me who is sick to death of the typical high school romance anime, outside of the special one — looking at my gyaru piece for the exceptions to the rule — where the wonderful older ladies don’t win, then this is the one for you.

Despite the number of overused tropes that this series is loaded with, it moves at a fairly nice pace and doesn’t really idle around, instead keeping the plot moving along nicely. The series maxed all its stats into the main reason we’re all here: the art. The animation quality of the series is really quite good considering I had never heard of it before this.

Finally, while the series isn’t anything special, it’s genuinely not bad either, and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t enjoying it. Sometimes all you need from anime is an easily consumed story and some big ol’ titties.
