Inti Creates is making a 32 bit-style Love Live action platformer

File this under “sentences we never thought we’d publish”: renowned developer Inti Creates is working on a Love Live action game. Known as Yohane the Parhelion: BLAZE in the DEEPBLUE, the game is an adaptation of a Love Live Sunshine spinoff anime of the same name.

Cast in the role of titular protagonist Yohane, the game sees you exploring an undersea dungeon in search of your missing friends — who, of course, are “played” by the other members of the Love Live Sunshine core cast. Once rescued, Yohane will be able to summon her friends to support her in battle, as well as make use of magical weapons that she crafts using materials found in the dungeon. She’ll also be supported by her wolf-like companion Lailaps.

In true exploration platformer tradition, acquiring new weapons and abilities will allow Yohane to access new areas of the dungeon and discover new secrets. There will also be parts of the dungeon that feature randomised layouts, meaning the game will be a little bit different each time you play it. From the trailer and promotional screenshots, it looks as if these areas will be accessed via special portals.

The crafting system features 90 different recipes for Yohane to create using items that she finds in the dungeon, and it sounds as if these will be important not just for battle, but also for traversing various challenges and solving puzzles.

In contrast to Inti Creates’ other recent game of this type, the excellent Gal Guardians: Demon Purge, Yohane the Parhelion: BLAZE in the DEEPBLUE is a full-on open-structure exploration platformer. The undersea dungeon that forms the setting for the game features a variety of different locations to investigate, including temples, ruins and a sunken ship.

The game features graphics in the style of 32-bit 2D games such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and is already looking thoroughly lovely if the initial trailer is anything to go by. As an Inti Creates title, we can expect slick performance, solid gameplay, considerable depth and plenty of replay value.

Further details are relatively thin on the ground at this time, but we do know that the game will be hitting all major platforms (Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbone, Xbox Series blargh and Windows PC via Steam) on November 16, 2023. Fingers crossed that Inti Creates partners up with someone for a lovely physical release again.
