Everyone out there who plays games has at one point thought “I would like to make one of these” — but coding is hard. There have been a few drag and drop tools out there like the fantastic RPG Maker, but now PlataGO! is stepping up to do the same for platformers on Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC where it’s out right now in Early Access.
We’ve been playing around with this for a couple of weeks now and it’s very versatile – letting you input your own graphics, like Mario or Mega Man sprites – or just settle with the multitude of in-game graphics. There are loads of nice features in there – including the ability to change the “theme” of your level at the click of a button, flicking between styles that mimic various retro consoles including (drool) Game Boy.
Developed by Super Icon, PlataGO! as a tool is actually an enhanced version of how they developed Life of Pixel — their very own platformer game that saw you journeying through the history of video games.
Just by dragging and dropping you can create platformers with a wealth of assets already in the game, and adjust variables like jump height and whether or not to have double jumping.
You can also import your own sprites for plenty of fun (but we’ll have more on that later).
Currently the game is out on Early Access, which allows you to create and share levels with other PlataGO! users.
It’s 10% off for the launch week, but only £3.99 anyway, so if you’ve ever wanted to try making your own platformer there’s really no excuses anymore.
PlataGO! is out now on PC via Steam Early Access, but will also be launching in full, as well as coming to Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, later in 2018.
