Foamstars release set for February, coming to PlayStation Plus

Square Enix has revealed that its foam-based FPS Foamstars will release for PS4 and PS5 on February 6, 2024.

Alongside the Foamstars release date, Square Enix also announced that the game will be available as part of February’s PlayStation Plus monthly games lineup. This means that all PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to claim Foamstars at launch. Since it requires PS+ to play online anyway, this is a win for anyone wanting to try the game out without putting any extra cash down.

It’s a shame that this news came with some unfortunate information as well. During a press event for Foamstars, VGC asked producer Kosuke Okatani whether AI generated content will be used at all (Square Enix has made use of AI in the past for a re-release of Portopia on PC). And unfortunately, the answer was yes.

While Okatani was keen to stress that AI generated content makes up “0.01% or even less” of Foamstars, it’s still unfortunate to see it used at all — it certainly doesn’t do the game any favours when you take into account all of the comparisons to Nintendo’s Splatoon franchise.
