Letter from the Editor: I’m taking a holiday!

Hi folks! Editor Pete here, and I’m delighted to say that I’m taking a holiday — something that I haven’t done over the course of the last couple of years while I’ve been in charge here. Apparently you’re supposed to actually take time off from your job at least a bit, though, so I’m doing just that over the Christmas period.

Why am I telling you this? Well, primarily so you know that if it’s a little quieter around here than usual, that’s the reason. Of course, our intrepid writers Trent and Lilia are on deck and prepared to provide you with some delightful bits and pieces over the course of the next couple of weeks while I’m on holiday — including, among other things, their own top picks for their Games of 2022.

Holiday time! Doukyuusei

You may have also noticed that regular writers Conor and Isaac have been absent from these pages for a little while. Conor went and found himself a full-time job that sadly didn’t leave him much time for contributing to Rice any more, so we had to bid a fond farewell to him a while back, and wish him all the best. Isaac, meanwhile, had to take a temporary step back for personal reasons, but we hope to be able to welcome him back to these pages soon. We’re also hoping to bring in one or two new people in the new year, also, so we look forward to that!

It’s been a very interesting year, with lots of great things going on — and I think Rice has really distinguished itself with its coverage thanks to the efforts of our writers. Rather than being just another news site where you end up reading the same stories you see all over the rest of the Internet, we’re instead aiming for something a bit more “evergreen”; a site that you can dip into at any time and enjoy what you read, regardless of whether or not it’s “current”.

Think of how you can pick up an old magazine and still enjoy the features therein at any time — that’s where we want Rice to be — whereas a newspaper is probably already out of date by the time you have it in your hands. That is one of the main reasons we set up the Rice Digital Feature Library, where you can find a wide variety of things to read, including ongoing features such as Waifu Wednesday, Hump Day Husbandos and Blissful Death, as well as in-depth features on specific topics in our fields of interest.

We’re a niche-interest site and we pride ourselves on that. As such, we’ll be continuing our own fiercely independent coverage throughout the holidays and into the new year, with plenty of exciting titles on the horizon just waiting for us to explore — as well as even more forgotten classics that deserve more attention than they got on their original release!

As Editor, I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make Rice what it is today — that includes both the contributors, who provide the material that you read every day, and you, the audience, who make all that hard work worthwhile. It’s a genuine pleasure to have the opportunity to sit here to entertain and inform you on a daily basis, and I hope you’ll continue following us on our journey into the new year.

For now, though, I’m officially signing off for a much-needed and very welcome Christmas holiday — though I suspect I won’t be able to resist poking my head in at least once or twice over my time off — and thus I’d like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. I’ll see you all soon!
