Hump Day Husbandos: Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd (Fire Emblem: Three Houses)
Since we have quite the extensive list of waifus from Fire Emblem: Three Houses, there’s always plenty of room open to cover its sheer amount of loveable male characters. So, while I am still in the midst of seeing through my hard playthrough of the Xenologue DLC expansion for Engage, here’s a look back at arguably the very best guy in the franchise’s previous mainline entry of Three Houses: Prince Dimitri, one of its main characters. It’s only right since we have covered both Edelgard and Claude already!
Spoilers mentioned.
Who is Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd?
As House Leader of the Blue Lions, Dimitri’s regimented and chivalrous nature juxtaposes with the more laid-back and chippy attitude of Claude, the other male House Leader of Garreg Mach Monastery. However, Dimitri’s approachableness — and seemingly masked emotions that even Byleth picks up in early chapters — hides a certain depth to his character. This depth presents itself at the forefront after the time skip, effortlessly drumming up the drama, tension and consequences of all the events in the game.
Now broken and unstable due to certain revelations post-time skip, the once honourable noble knight is a lone warrior whose judgement is completely clouded with the fixation of achieving vengeance. But before we really get into it, it’s interesting to note how much more character-driven of a tale Dimitri’s House route (Azure Moon) is compared to the other routes, which take a wider focus on the lore and politics of the title instead.
Dimitri’s route hits hard for this reason, especially since witnessing the fallen hero obtain his well-deserved happy ending makes for the most emotional character plotline of them all, if you ask me.
Why we love him
So, let’s complete the triangle formation that is Fire Emblem: Three Houses’ main characters (outside of Byleth, that is) with a write-up about Dimitri.
As the Crown Prince of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus and House Leader of the Blue Lions, Dimitri’s significance to the events and developing storylines of Three Houses should be obvious. While Edelgard certainly carries the biggest sense of responsibility with her goals, the saying “everything comes with a price” is more than apt when it comes to Edelgard’s decision-making, with consequences that specifically challenge Dimitri’s sanity levels at each and every turn. For the greater good, right? Wrong! Give my man some well-deserved counselling, you mad woman!
Regardless of the route you are playing on and whose House you align with, Dimitri’s continuously evolving character arc is one of the toughest to witness in Three Houses, while also being the most rewarding. Dimitri’s life was and very well may continue to be an obstacle course of tragedy upon tragedy. Already having to live through a rough childhood on top of survivors’ guilt is bad enough; having him possibly face his childhood friends Sylvain, Ingrid and Felix on the war-torn battlefield is just cruel.
Why you will love him
But regardless of which route or House you are mentoring, Dimitri becomes a shell of his former self, hellbent on taking up revenge on Edelgard by killing her himself. This makes for the very best character arc of the entire game, with it being especially notable for how involved the protagonist character is in relation to said growth and guiding of Dimitri for his own sake — and for those closest to him in both past and present. The hand-holding in the rain changed me as a person as a result of this character writing and journey.
It’s safe to say that Dimitri goes through hell and, for the most part, fails to ever rise up from his pit of despair because Byleth (and by them I mean you as the player) may never be there to support him in his time of need.
Obviously I’m being biased here, but I feel Azure Moon is the best route and ending out of the four available, due to how Dimitri is able to take a hold of his future once more. Contrast with how the other three end with him meeting an uncertain fate, being executed or slain on the battlefield; Azure Moon will always be the good ending in my heart.
All in all, there are more than a handful of good reasons as to why Dimitri always ranked high and even first more often than not as players’ favourite character of the game in the official polls. It goes without saying why so many of us made a beeline in S-supporting him as soon as it was made available – comforting him was our one and only goal, no shame in admitting that!
Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a Nintendo exclusive, and one that is a must-play for any Nintendo Switch owner.
