Japanese Video Game Chart Analysis – Week 28

Japanese Video Game Chart Analysis – Week 28 – (July 8^th – July 14^th) has been a pretty mediocre sales period with 5 new releases, the majority of which fail to make a big impact on the chart. The top two is a new entry double header with Wii U title Pikmin 3 and Vita brawler Youkai Watch taking first and second respectively as reported by Media Create via Neogaf. 

Pikmin 3 takes the top spot this week with just 92, 720 units sold, perhaps a little lower than initially anticipated, however as the title was released at the back end of the sales period this may somewhat justify the slow start. Coming in at number 2 shifting 53, 654 units the 3DS title Youkai Watch makes a solid debut, it will be interesting to see whether this potential heavyweight has the same sales power as Level 5’s previous media franchises. The PS3 version of Earth Defence Force 2025 takes 3^rd and maintains a strong position in the top 5 with 37, 024 units sold.

At number 4, Friend Collection: New Life continues its notable sales consistency adding another 26, 000 units to the already impressive lifetime total. Rounding out the top 5, New Super Luigi U jumps in with 24, 881 units sold, this is of course not including digital purchases and as such not representative of its true sales status.

Other notable releases this week include the polarising Dead Island: Riptide at number 8 with 18, 462 units sold and Metal Gear Solid Legacy at number 9 shifting 17, 599 units. Unfortunately for those looking forward to getting their Snake on the European version doesn’t officially release until September 13^th.

Game Of The Week – Youkai Watch

The 3DS title Youkai Watch is Level 5’s latest multimedia series, following in the footsteps of the developer’s previous heavyweight franchises. The game is designed to feature similar game play to that of Inazuma Eleven but with completely different narrative elements.

The story focuses upon a young boy named Keita who finds a mysterious watch which gives him the ability to see supernatural creatures in everyday life.

An accompanying anime and manga are currently in the pipeline so depending on response in Japan we may one day see a localisation of this title on European shores.
