Waifu Wednesday: Anzu Hoshino (Romantic Killer)

Waifu Wednesday

We’ve all got our priorities in life. Anzu Hoshino from Romantic Killer has hers perfectly figured out. She needs precisely three things in her life; video games, chocolate treats, and her adorable cat. Truly she is a brilliant example of living your best life, at least until her life is turned into a chaotic mess by a meddling wizard on a twisted mission to jump-start her love life.

For Waifu Wednesday, it is time that we celebrate the champion of 2D boys everywhere, Anzu Hoshino, as she tries desperately to remain single in a world eager to see her thrust into a romantic relationship.

Who is Anzu Hoshino?

It’s a situation we’ve all been in. You load up a video game you’ve been eager to play for weeks, only to be transported to a pocket dimension by a strange potato-shaped wizard. Due to Japan’s declining birth rate, the magical world is running out of energy. To fix this, they’ve decided to help make romance happen for some of the nation’s most desperate singles. As she is primarily obsessed with playing video games, eating chocolate, and her cat, Anzu Hoshino is chosen as a prime candidate for the project.

Inflicting romantic situations on someone who isn’t interested in them is bad enough, but the wizard crosses a line when they remove all video games and chocolate from Anzu’s life. They even use their magic to send her beloved cat and parents overseas for two years to help the young woman focus on her love life, threatening to withhold all three until she finds herself in a true romance.

Why we love her

Most people might crumble and succumb to the overwhelming power of the wizard, but Anzu Hoshino is not most people. When her world is turned into a romance visual novel, she rebels and tries to undermine every attempt to inflict hot guys on her life. When a storm forces her to let the guy down the street stay over, she wears her most ridiculous clothes to make him less interested in her. She sabotages her own cooking to make sure she never wins his heart through his stomach. Against all odds, Anzu is resolved to fight for her right to eat chocolate and love her cat a bit more than is healthy.

Anzu Hoshino knows that 3D men can never match the beauty and perfection of her favourite 2D husbandos. It is a philosophy we encourage here at Rice Digital, because a 2D man will never break your heart, but there is more to it for Anzu. At the core of the story is her desire to live her life with her own priorities. She rebels not because she is opposed to romance in her life, but because she doesn’t want to have that romance inflicted upon her against her will or to have the things that make her happy taken away.

Why you’ll love her

While a certain amount of self-improvement is useful when you’re looking to find love, changing fundamental things about yourself won’t help you. Anzu Hoshino, without saying it, knows that anyone who falls for her when she isn’t playing video games or devouring mountains of chocolate isn’t falling for the real her. Instead, they’ll just be infatuated with the facsimile created by a potato wizard from another dimension, and that isn’t true love.

If they really cared about Anzu’s love life, the wizard would find someone who shared her interests instead of forcing her to abandon them. If her new boyfriend doesn’t love video games and cats as much as she does, can their relationship truly have any hope of blossoming?

If you’ve somehow missed Romantic Killer, you can catch the first season of the anime on Netflix or read the manga on the Shonen Jump app.
