Waifu Wednesday: Two Hands Revy (Black Lagoon)

Waifu Wednesday

In my ongoing quest for dangerous anime women, I’ve uncovered plenty of prime waifu material. Few check quite as many boxes as Two Hands Revy of Black Lagoon fame. She is brutal, profane, and dangerous, which are all positive features in my book. This notorious pirate won’t stop until she gets what she wants, with little regard for the damage she causes along the way.

Waifu Wednesday isn’t complete without a bit of danger and some bad choices, so here is why you’ll love Two Hands Revy just as much as I do.

Who is Two Hands Revy?

Two Hands Revy with a rocket Launcher

The Lagoon Company makes its home the fictional city of Roanapur, Thailand. Despite the very official-sounding name, the “company” is a group of ruthless, dangerous pirates who commit numerous acts of violence throughout the series. As cutthroat as the group is, none are more so than the woman known as Two Hands Revy. She gets her name from the fact that she can shoot with both her hands, which isn’t the most creative moniker I’ve come across but I’m not about to argue with her.

Revy is a hard-drinking, chain-smoking woman prone to fits of rage at the slightest provocation. She is by far the best fighter in the Lagoon Company of pirates and possibly the best fighter in the city of Roanapur. In a combination of traits that would make even the most strident opponent of gun control laws in America think twice, she is also armed to the teeth with rocket launchers, grenades, and, of course, a pair of handguns.

Why we love her

Like most people that we meet throughout Black Lagoon, Two Hands Revy wasn’t always so dangerous. She started killing at a young age, starting with her abusive father and working her way through just about anyone who got in her way. She’s certainly not what you would call a “good” person but the show does just enough to make sure you understand why she turned out the way she did.

Throughout Black Lagoon, Two Hands Revy bursts onto any scene like a force of nature. Her solution to almost any problem is almost always the one with the biggest explosion and most collateral damage. That never really changes throughout the show, though she does slowly warm up to the idea that maybe there is a place for a more nuanced approach to the missions the company undertakes. Though left to her own devices, she’ll always choose the loud and fast plan.

Why you’ll love her

Of all the women I’ve fawned over in this feature, none have been more explicitly dangerous than Two Hands Revy. Not just because she is so good at fighting but because she is so eager to prove herself as the hardest person in a city filled with hardened pirates and thieves. Revy has earned her reputation as the most capable fighter in Roanapur through several years of exceptional violence. Even when she manages to show a bit of a softer side between missions, she is still a highly-strung instrument of destruction just waiting to be let loose and I wouldn’t want her any other way.

If you haven’t seen Black Lagoon before, you really should. Not only is Two Hands Revy stunning and terrifying in equal measure, but the whole cast is also one of the best ensembles in recent anime history. At the risk of starting a war in the comments, I would say that it is the best pirate anime of all time, including the ongoing saga of One Piece. Best of all, you can catch it in all its over-the-top glory on Netflix.
