Reminder: Mario will die today (featuring Marth from the Fire Emblem series)

Today is the day that Nintendo will celebrate Mario‘s 35th anniversary by ending his life… or at least, the production of some of his games — plus Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light for some reason.

It’s still not clear why Nintendo has decided to do this, but there is a least a little time left before everything disappears.

On the Switch side of things, Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be delisted from the eShop, with no more physical copies being produced after March 31. It’s not to hard to find the game physically right now, though this could change soon.

Super Mario Bros. 35 wont be playable at all once it’s delisted though, being a digital-only title. It had potential to be another nice bonus for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, but didn’t really see many updates before its demise.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light is also part of the anniversary ‘celebrations’, being delisted on the same date. Physical copies are already hard to find due to their limited print run, so legally acquiring the game will be quite difficult after today.

The Game & Watch: Super Mario Bros. system is another casualty, ending production from today. Like 3D All-Stars, these aren’t too hard to find currently, but might become rare over the coming months.

Even cartoons are seemingly not safe, with The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 possibly being delisted from Netflix as well. At the very least, this series (and other Nintendo cartoons) can be watched legally via other means.

It’s not been a great month for digital games, as Sony announed the closure of the PSP, Vita, and PS3’s digital stores earlier in the week. Digital stores should be making it easier to buy copies of games that are hard to find physically, but instead, some games are disappearing forever.
