Six of the best spring anime season shows to watch

Six of the Best banner

Another anime season is upon us and, as usual, there are some stand-out shows among the increasingly crowded field of series vying for our time. It is easy to feel overwhelmed when so many shows are hitting streaming services in the spring anime season this year, but that’s okay. We’re here to help.

There are simply too many shows to watch each year, so here are the ones we’ll be keeping an eye on in the 2023 spring anime season. There are some returning shows getting another chance to grip us, spinoffs of existing favourites, and a couple of new titles we’re hoping will fill a hole in our hearts we didn’t know existed. The good news is that all these shows are going to be streamed by Crunchyroll, so you won’t need to go searching for them all over the place.

Demon Slayer Swordsmith Village Arc

Spring anime season: Demon Slayer

I’ve opined about how the opening to each Demon Slayer season is actually better than the show itself, but, against my better judgement, I find myself excited for the spring anime season of the show. The shounen mega-hit never misses on the animation, even if the pacing is sometimes glacial at best. Plus, this season promises to give us some time with Mitsuru, the Love Hashra, who has been the star of more cosplays and fan art than I can count. Getting to see a super-strong anime woman in action is my jam.

Dr. Stone: New World

Spring anime season: Dr Stone

This is another show where pacing can be questionable, but I’m keeping an eye on Dr. Stone because, in my mind, this is its last chance to deliver on the promise of its fantastic premise. The post-apocalyptic world it set up in its opening episodes is creepy yet endlessly fun, but the heavy use of flashbacks to explain every detail in the world is frustrating. After the underwhelming second season, I’m hopeful that a change of scenery will reignite my interest in Dr. Stone in the spring anime season.

KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World

Spring anime season: Konosuba

I don’t really need to explain this one, do I? KonoSuba is fun, so a spinoff starring everyone’s favourite Explosion-obsessed mage is a recipe for success, right? Like the original show, this one is probably going to be a binge-watch at the end of the spring anime season rather than one I follow week-on-week, but I still expect it to be good, silly, stupid fun that will serve as a palette cleanser after some of the more intense shows on this list.

Mashle: Magic and Muscles

Spring anime season: Mashle

Like How Heavy Are The Dumbbells You Lift? from a few years ago, I love any anime that celebrates the power and glory of working out. Mash lives in a world where being born without magic gets you targeted for elimination, giving him two choices; he could live in fear for his whole life or he could work out so much that no magic could hurt him. Wisely, he chose the way of the gym. I haven’t read the manga for this show yet but the concept is fun enough for me to get excited about.

My Home Hero

Spring anime season: My Home Hero

When he finds out his daughter is being abused by her boyfriend, Tetsuo Tosu has a bit of an extreme reaction and kills the guy, only to find out he was a member of a local crime family. This show promises to be a great cat-and-mouse plot as Tetsuo has to protect his family from the dangerous people that are snooping around. I like how tense the plot of this anime sounds while still sounding somewhat grounded in reality. If it can deliver on that then it will easily be one of the best shows of the spring anime season.

Magical Destroyers

Spring anime season: Magical Destroyers

Imagine living in a world where all otaku culture had been wiped from the face of the world. Nightmarish, right? That’s the whole premise of Magical Destroyers, where the Otaku Hero seeks to restore the world’s freedom to enjoy the things they like in peace. That’s all any of us want, isn’t it? It sounds like a fun concept that could, with some good writing, deliver a surprisingly powerful message. Or it could be silly and shallow, which sounds good too.
