Root Film guide: how to solve Yagumo Part 2

Kadokawa Games’ excellent Root Film is doubtless thrilling plenty of you as we speak — but mysteries aren’t always easy to solve!

That’s why we’ve got a Root Film guide for you to follow and keep you on track. We’ve already covered the first case in the game, so today it’s on to Yagumo’s second chapter, set in beautiful Tsuwano. Let’s get started!

Shimane TV Archive Centre

This part of Root Film starts with Yagumo chatting to Sayama. Magari will enter after a while and doubtless cause a wince or two.

Shimane TV Headquarters

Head here for Yagumo’s meeting with Isogami. Look at the document on the left. Look at the document in the middle and note Yagumo’s reaction; this will be explained later in Root Film. Then look at the document on the right and speak with Isogami to confirm your decision.

Shimane TV Archive Centre

Stop by for a quick chat with Sayama.

Studio Yagumo

Go to Yagumo’s room and check his email. Read both messages and note the senders; both will become relevant later in Root Film as a whole. Stop by the reception room and discover Magari is making arrangements for your trip. Head back out.

MihoKan

Stop by and see if Ibuse is available. He’s not, so head back to the office.

Studio Yagumo

Head to the reception room, where Magari has finished her calls. Time to take a trip and begin Chapter 1.

Tsuwano Station

Meet up with Amakata. Chat with Magari twice to send some information over to Amakata. Then chat with Amakata three times to continue.

Yoshinaga Rice Store

Stop by here for a quick visit to meet the owner of the rice shop and see the koi carp.

Minoya

Head here and have lunch.

Japan Heritage Centre

Meet up with Takano to find out a bit about the area and get permission to film.

Tsuwano Station

Head back here for a surprise meeting with Ibuse and Monami.

Yasaka Shrine

Go here to meet Kuramochi and see the start of the Hoshiai Festival. Follow it along to the Yoshinaga Rice Store.

Yoshinaga Rice Store

Pay close attention to what’s going on in the background, it will become relevant later in this chapter of Root Film! Enjoy the rest of the parade, then head to Kuramochi’s home for your evening activities.

Kuramochi’s Mansion

Chat with Kuramochi and Shiba, paying attention to the koi carp pond in the garden. As the chapter ends, in true Root Film tradition, something terrible happens!

Yoshinoya

After the events in Kuramochi’s mansion, chat with Magari and Amakata until they don’t have anything new to say, then speak with Kanade (he’s just out of shot on the right) a couple of times to proceed.

Kuramochi’s Mansion

Head here and you’ll discover the police are all over the place. Flee from the detectives and head somewhere else instead.

Yoshinaga Rice Store

The owner here will reveal that Kuramochi’s wife wasn’t the only person to die last night. This is crucial information!

Japan Heritage Centre

Speak with Takano, and it will become clear that you can’t keep many secrets in a town like Tsuwano.

Yasaka Shrine

Head here to meet Tokima for the first time. He will become relevant later.

Taikodani Inari Shrine

Follow the line of torii gates up to the shrine itself. Examine the shrine and the tourists in the background, then chat with Magari and Amakata a couple of times each. After that, chat with Shiba, who is standing by herself in the background. Speak with her four times in total to get all the information you can, then leave.

Washihara Hachimangu Shrine

Head here to run into Ibuse and Monami again. Speak with them both until Ibuse heads off, then leave.

Tsuwano Streets

Go here to find the home of Seiya Ito, the second person who died the previous evening. Once again, the police are all over the place, but surely that means…

Kuramochi’s Mansion

There’s still police tape over the way into the mansion, but you’ll witness an interesting argument while you’re here. Memorise the Synaesthesia phrase about Ito and Kuramochi’s wife having some sort of special relationship.

Yoshinoya

Review the footage and hand it over to the cops when they demand it. Lucky Kanade backed it up earlier, huh?

In the Van

Review the footage. Examine the scar on Mrs. Kuramochi’s neck, then examine her pendant three times. Check the metal basin a couple of times. Finally, check the note on the floor and memorise the phrase when prompted. Examine the note again to move on. If things don’t move on, check the drawers as well, though they’re not relevant.

Washihara Hachimangu Shrine

Stop by here to meet up with Tokima and Sakio Ito, brother of the deceased. Speak with Tokima and memorise the phrase about the Ito brothers being twins. Speak with Ito to learn that he and his brother were classmates with Mrs. Kuramochi in high school. Memorise the phrase when prompted. Speak with them both until they have nothing new to say, then leave.

Taikodani Inari Shrine

Shiba’s here again. Speak with her and memorise the fact that Mrs. Kuramochi is banned from smartphone use. Continue speaking with Shiba until she leaves.

Yasaka Shrine

Root Film’s resident Mystery Man shows up again. The answer to his question this time around is “It’s a blessed place”.

Yoshinaga Rice Store

Speak with the owner and memorise the information about the aqueducts.

Tsuwano Station

Examine the spot in the background to discover the accessory shop owner. Chat with him about the case; seems you need a picture of Mrs. Kuramochi to get any more information out of him. Leave the station for now.

Kuramochi’s Mansion

The police tape is gone, so you can get in after a quick chat with the detectives… and some proof of Amakata’s usefulness.

Mrs. Kuramochi’s Room

The police are still investigating the room, so you can’t do anything here yet.

Kuramochi’s Reception Room

Stop by here to witness a meeting between Kuramochi and the local doctor Hatoya, who was also a classmate of Mrs. Kuramochi and the Ito twins.

Kuramochi’s Kitchen

Shiba’s here, having some trash troubles. Examine the front trash bag to learn that the police have already searched them. Examine the rear trash bag for a curious discovery.

Kuramochi’s Reception Room

Ask Kuramochi about the necklace, and note the irritation on his fingers. Once he leaves to get the problem checked out, head back to the kitchen.

Kuramochi’s Kitchen

Ask Shiba if she has a picture of Mrs. Kuramochi. Rather helpfully, she does, so graciously accept it, then leave the mansion.

Tsuwano Station

Speak with the accessory shop owner again now you have the picture. Then ask Kanade — who is, as always, just out of shot — to show him the footage of Sakio Ito.

Kuramochi’s Mansion

Meet up with the detectives outside the mansion to come to some interesting conclusions about the gacha capsules and clear the chapter.

Yoshinoya

After some early-morning calisthenics with Amakata, chat with Magari to discover she’s convinced she saw a UFO. Speak with Amakata a couple of times to confirm your earlier discussion, then taunt poor Kanade to continue.

Tsuwano Streets

Sakio Ito is yelling at the police. After they depart, speak with him a couple of times to learn Hatoya was also in love with Mrs. Kuramochi. What a popular gal she was. Memorise the phrase when prompted. Speak with Ito until he has nothing else to say, then leave.

Yoshinaga Rice Store

Speak with the owner about Seiya Ito to learn the location of the Fundoya-Shichiemon Mercantile House, which Seiya Ito supposedly frequented on a regular basis.

Tsuwano Station

Go to speak with the accessory shop owner… but he seems to be absent.

Fundoya-Shichiemon

Speak with the owners until you learn about Seiya Ito’s asthma. Memorise the phrase when prompted.

Tsuwano Station

The accessory shop owner is back. Speak with him to come to some interesting conclusions.

Yasaka Shrine

Have a quick chat with Tokima while you pass by.

Taikodani Inari Shrine

Speak with Magari and Amakata, then the detectives, who will shoo you away. Speak with Magari to come up with a devious plan. Then speak with the detectives again to put it into action. Memorise the phrase about Mrs. Kuramochi having sleep meds in her system.

Yoshinoya

Check the footage. Memorise the fact that Kuramochi spoke with Seiya Ito. Then examine the object that Kuramochi appears to be showing to Seiya Ito and memorise the fact about it.

Hatoya Clinic

Attempt to stop by, but it appears to be closed. You’ll have to come back later.

Kuramochi’s Mansion

As it happens, Hatoya is here. Speak with him, then head into the mansion.

Mrs. Kuramochi’s Room

Examine the decorated window into the hall to determine Shiba couldn’t have been able to see the metal basin. Then examine the window to the outside that appears to be cracked open.

Kuramochi’s Front Garden

Speak with Shiba and memorise the information about the will-o-wisp at Taikodani Inari Shrine. Then leave the mansion.

Hatoya Clinic

Hatoya’s back now. Head in to speak with him. Speak with him until Max Mode kicks off. The correct responses this time are:

• “Mrs. Kuramochi’s autopsy found sleep medication.”
• “Hatoya liked Akari Kuramochi.”
• “Seiya bought sleep incense for his severe asthma.”

When you’re done, memorise the fact that Kuramochi has a resin allergy.

Yoshinoya

Check the footage for the supposed UFO that Magari claims she saw, and memorise the fact that it flew from Kuramochi’s mansion towards Taikodani Inari Shrine. That’s all the information you’re getting; time for the grand showdown to conclude this chapter of Root Film.

Kuramochi’s Mansion

Commence pursuit! Kuramochi’s up first. The correct responses are:

• “Kuramochi talked with Seiya Ito on the day of the Hoshiai Festival.”
• “Kuramochi had Akari’s accessory when he talked to Seiya Ito.”
• “Kuramochi has a resin allergy.”

No rest for the wicked. Time to deal with Sakio, too. The correct responses are:

• “A will-o-wisp appeared at Taikodani Inari Shrine.”
• “A UFO-like object flew from Kuramochi’s mansion to Taikodani Inari Shrine.”

Nothing to it! You’re done with this part of Root Film — aside from a well-earned drink.
